Week Thirteen Reflections

Please post reflections for week thirteen here, Thanks!

  1. Yesterday’s presentation was on Multiple Intelligences and how we, teachers can help and assess our students.

    My applications

    1) Although I don’t usually agree on IQ tests, I found it could be interesting to mention to my students that different intelligences exist. It is not because they are weak in one topic that they are failure. It would be a good experience next school year to have my students doing a test similar to the one we took yesterday.

    2) The control chaos described by Dr Andy is actually something I am interested in. It will be a good experience to set up a lesson where students can use different abilities to study the same topic.

    3) I do agree on longer blocks of time (i.e., double periods) are instrumental to more in-depth work. All my teaching occurs on double periods and it is true that as long as I keep my students interested they will learn more than if they did on 2 single periods.

Thanks a lot to Chie, Hee and Jeff

  2. Hi everyone! I enjoyed the presentation of Chie, Hee Jin and Jeffrey. It was very entertaining, Congratulation guys! Good job!
I remember I had this paper (last semester-Multiple Intelligence) submitted to Dr. Andy in Foundation of Education class. I recalled what Dr. Andy mentioned last night about “strengths and weaknesses.” I would just like to share this....According to Gardner the challenge to educators is to discover each learner’s cognitive profile, so that, we can make more credible decisions about which program of education to follow if we want to play from strength or if we want to shore up weaknesses (Gardner, 1986, p.278).
    My Applications are the following:
    1. I need to be flexible enough and teach in a variety of learning strategies in the classroom. However, I will remain to be sensitive to individual students.
    2. Some students are good in kinesthetic and they want to move around. These are 'hyper' learners who learn through movement. They like to do physical activity. Kinesthetic learning is when someone learns things from doing or being part of them. They struggle to learn by reading or listening. They are more interested in games, and other activities which concerns movements. Kinesthetic students are fond of tapping their fingers or foot on the floor. Therefore I will make sure that they do not distract their classmates. I will keep them busy all the time and this will greatly help them in the classroom. I will include more activities for them to move around, as this increases their understanding such as sporting activities, art, and acting. I will let them listen to music while learning or studying, which is multitasking. There’s no doubt in my mind that these students can excel, through proper monitoring.
    3. I will create a menu (lessons) for students to discover their individual personalities, for example:
Linguistic Menu- Conduct a debate on a topic, create talk show or radio program, conduct an interview
Logical- Mathematical Menu- Design and conduct an experiment. Translate a formula, make up analogies to explain, describe the patterns of symmetry
Bodily-Kinesthetic Menu- Plan and attend a field trip, create a movement or sequence of movements, make a task or puzzle cards, build or construct a design
Visual Menu- Chart, map, cluster, or graph, create a slideshow, videotape, or photo album, invent a board or card game to demonstrate, illustrate, draw, paint, sketch, or sculpt
Musical Menu- Sing different kinds of songs (integrating it with your lessons), give a presentation with appropriate musical accompaniment
Interpersonal Menu- Conduct a meeting, use social skills in class, practice giving and receiving feedback, use technology, practice in a service project
Intrapersonal Menu- Describe qualities that they possess, set and pursue a goal, describe one of their personal values, write a journal entry, and assess their own work
Naturalist Menu- create observation notebooks, describe changes in local or global environment, care for pets, wildlife, gardens, or parks, use binoculars, microscopes, or magnifiers, draw or photograph natural objects

    Cheers,
    Evan :)

  3. Reflection # 10

Last night was a wonderful class I really enjoyed the class. In the beginning I had no idea about the topic but yes, I knew that a single person could had several intelligences. After listening to lasts nights presentation I had actually thought of many ways in which this could be helpful. Same like olivier I feel that the IQ test are not very accurate as you can lie while doing the test.

    3 Applications:

    1. Have students take the test so that we as teachers can have a rough idea of what the the students learning styles and personality. Although I mentioned that I dont really agree with the IQ test, but I feel even if students lie they would lie about something thy dont like so we can get a rough idea.

    2. Plan the lessons in such a way that it has a variety of activities which uses many intelligences, to have students participate in the activity.

    3. One of my activity in class can also be, dividing the students in different groups according to the dominent intelligence and give the different groups different task to do.

I had a great time last night thankyou...

  4. Reflection week 13

We had another enjoyable presentation last night by Heejin, Chie and Jeff. You all did a great job. Multiple Intelligence is a very infomative topic, incorporating Gardner's nine intelligences is a good way to teach our student's today than the traditional approach. Traditionally, schools focused more on languages and mathematical skills leaving behind a lot of other areas.

    - I would give students the opportunities to know their strengths and weaknessnes in their different fields of intelligence so that they can improve on their weaknesses.

    - Students will get a freedom of choice in choosing their own way of presenting materials learned in class, it could be a powerpoint presentation, a role way, essay writing or any other media as long as they show that they have understood the material and can follow the required rubric.

    - Constantly praising and rewarding students but appropriately, not too much to discouraged the learners.

  5. week 13 reflection
This week I enjoyed another powerful presentation “Multiple intelligences, how to incorporate them into curriculum choices and design ”from Hin Jin ,Chie and Jeff. Congratulations to the two cute ladies and the gentleman .I never know the Multiple intelligences before this study ,because when I was a students before university ,school intelligence evaluate system is narrow and simplex. Nowadays ,students were cognized and concept more and more ,multiple intelligences as a scientific system should be apply to education more extensive . The strong activity promoted me to understand the topic . The “Discovering your smarts: A multiple intelligence checklist ” is very useful and strong tool to understood myself and to understand students .
    Application :
1, “Discovering your smarts: A multiple intelligence checklist ” very useful to understand students’ abilities ,in the future ,I will use it .
2, As the chart shows, Retarded students and genius are little, majority are ordinary intelligence students .But we can not ignore retarded students and genius who in a big size ordinary intelligence students-oriented class , there are two Retarded students in my class ,Thai teachers do very well ,when teaching and evaluate ,made another more Suitable for their interlligence system. I will study with Thai teachers .
3,Even level intelligence same students ,their 8 parts smart difference .we can not require and force students’ 8 parts smart are keep balance . I will encourage students to develop their strengths ,and help them make up their weakness according their need ,but not forcing .

  6. Reflection week 13,

Hello Friends, I did think that I had just come back from Japan and Korea. Last topic presentation about Multiple Intelligences was performed by Hin Jin ,Chie and Jeff led me not only to approach Multiple Intelligences, but to travel Korea and Japan. Thank you Jeff, a handsome American Man and two pretty Girls for your nice and valuable information.

    Application,

    1. I do value the power of intelligence that each person has different from others. I first discover which kind of intelligence I have in order to improve and develop it each day.

    2. As a teacher, I not only teach knowledge but help learners find out his or her owe potential and talent otherwise I will miss chances to talk with learners and help them find their talents. Numerous activities that learners can improve and master their strong point. Therefore, my invention in preparing lessons and presentation skills, how to match learners' needs is very important and necessary. I have to work harder.

    3. Must be patient with learners especially those who are weak at learning in the class because good or smart learners easy make me happy, and I may not less pay attention to other ones. Patience and openness to all learns are very important to teachers because if I don't guide them who will do that job?

    Thank and cheer,

    Khoa, Vu do anh

  7. Thankfully week 13 didn’t prove to be unlucky for the guys presenting. I thought I had a good handle on the subject, but it turned out I had some misconceptions. The idea of multiple intelligences seemed to bring together the topics of differentiated instruction in the way that not all learners are the same, teaching creatively because if as teachers we are to allow students to demonstrate and develop their different intelligences we need to have a variety of tasks.

    My Applications:

    1. As a language teacher I stress to my students that the ability to speak English doesn’t mean you are smart (no jokes please). I think my grade nine students would like the idea of multiple intelligences and perhaps would be more positive about the gifts they do have.

    2. I especially liked Chie’s explanation about IQ tests and it was clear she had done some in depth research on the subject. She was able to give clear concise answers which highlighted the need to be prepared and subject ‘experts’ on the topics we are trying to teach our students.

    3. There was a great atmosphere in the class and the idea of being constantly rewarded with chocolates did motivate us to participate and answer. I was very vigilant for low flying chocolates that were flying about the room.
Not only did I have a great time, I also learnt the importance and the idea of multiple intelligences. Thanks a lot Chie, Hee Jin and Jeffrey.

  8. Last week's presentation was quite helpful and also provided new information to me, such as the new intelligence added which is called "existential intelligence".
Also giving examples of the careers that suit to each intelligence was a great idea which we can use to help our students in guiding them for their futures.

    My Applications:

1)I am a science teacher who is trying to improve my students' problem solving and critical thinking skills in order to get them be successful in science. But we should always keep in mind that not every single child can be good at logical thinking and should admit and appreciate some other intelligences that they posses.

2)Try to discover the intelligences of my students so that I can direct and encourage them to improve in their own intelligences and go further.

3)Research online on some lesson plans that I can use in my classes which appreciate multiple intelligences or even work on creating alternative lesson plans for different intelligences.

    Thank you

  9. First of all, thank you so much to Hin Jin ,Chie and Jeff for a fantastic presentation. Evan and Sister Rose taught us Multiple Intelligences. Before this presentation,I heard the word "Multiple Intelligences",but I don't knew the meaning. But after this presentation,I knew the eight smarts acronym, there are Music-Music Smart;Intrapersonal-Self Smart;Linguistic/Verbal-Word Smart;logical/Mathematical-Number Smart;Spatial/Visual-Picture Smart;Kinesthetic/Bodily-Body Smart;Interpersonal-People Smart;Nature-Nature Smart.Understanding this theory can make us more in-depth understanding ourself and others.

    Application:
1.The "brainstorm" is a very useful way to discover students smarts especially discover logical/Mathematical-Number Smart.

2.As a chinese teacher,I think write a sequel to a lesson or write a "what if",write"the rest of the story",this three activities can discover word smart, help student easily to improve their chinese writing.

3.IQ test can help teacher to know the student's level, can help teacher and parents know the children interest, advantage and disadvantage.

    Thank you.

  10. It was another enjoyable presentation this week, and I would like to say thanks to Chie, Hin Jin and Jeff, they did a very great presentation. They mentioned the Multiple Intelligences and IQ assessment which were very interesting. Although IQ assessment does not mean everything, it’s helpful to refer to curriculum design.

    My applications are:
    1. IQ assessment can let us know what kind of learning style students are, so our teaching methods can be adjusted.
    2. As Dr. Andy mentioned, let our students know their strengths and weaknesses in their different fields, so they can consider to develop their specialized skills by their strengths and improve their weaknesses.
    3. Not everyone has the talent, it can also be acquired through the efforts. Thus we can tell students to find their own inclinations, and build expertise gradually, They can also become experts.

  11. Asusual

This is my second attempt to write a comment!

Thanks Chie and Hee jin for their help and patience in the presentation.

    I learned three things:
!. Any presentation should be prepared one week in advance of presenting date!

    2. Multiple intelligences should be part of every curriculum with degree and amount being the only variables.

    3. Multiple Intelligences can and will create and affect lifelong learning in both adults and children>!

  12. Thanks for another wonderful presentation. You are the most kind teachers-- very generous with points and chocolates, trying to keep us motivated.Learning about Multiple Intelligence, make me think that everyone is smart but in difference ways. The only different is that "practice makes perfect".

    1. Through the example of our presenters, I learned that we need to continue to have faith in our students and never giving up on them. One day they will come around and say "thank you for being patience with me."
    2. I will try to use different smarts in my class so that students have opportunity to learn and push hard to build master our abilities to a higher level.
3.The MI IQ test is a good idea for a general idea start to get to know the student at the beginning of the year to see where their strength and weaknesses.

    thanks,
    sr. Rose

  13. The presentation on Multiple Intelligences was interesting and informative. Thanks to Chie, Hee Jin and Jeffrey for the wonderful presentation.

    My applications are as follows.
    1. I will give similar assessment of multiple intelligences to my students to determine individual's dominant intelligence. Knowing the preferred learning style and the dominant multiple intelligence of the students will help us, teachers, to develop teaching strategies to capitalize on students’ strengths and improve on their weaknesses.
    2. I will try to use a variety of teaching strategies, in terms of process, content and product, to address the multiple intelligences among my students.
    3. Among the differentiated instruction strategies, I will be using more of the flexible grouping to provide my students the opportunities to improve on their weaknesses and not always learn on their preferred learning styles. There will be instances that the students will be in a group based on their preferred learning style or multiple intelligence and sometimes in a heterogeneous group.

    Thank you.

  14. I love the greet job from Chie, Hee Jin and Jeffrey. I always think about the problem how to teach students to be the excellent one. From this show, I got the answers:
    1. An intelligence quotient, or IQ, is a score derived from one of several different standardized tests designed to assess intelligence. The term "IQ," from the German Intelligenz-Quotient, was devised by the German psychologist William Stern in 1912 as a proposed method of scoring children's intelligence tests such as those developed by Alfred Binet and Théodore Simon in the early 20th century. Lewis Terman accepted that form of scoring, expressing a score as a quotient of "mental age" and "chronological age," for his revision of the Binet-Simon test, the first version of the Stanford-Binet Intelligence Scales.
2.Although the term "IQ" is still in common use, the scoring of modern IQ tests such as the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale is now based on standard scoring of the subject's rank order on the test item content with the median score set to 100, and a standard deviation of 15, although not all tests adhere to that assignment of 15 IQ points to each standard deviation.
    3. The average IQ scores for many populations have been rising at an average rate of three points per decade since the early 20th century, a phenomenon called the Flynn effect. It is disputed whether these changes in scores reflect real changes in intellectual abilities, or merely methodological problems with past or present testing.
    Thank you!
