Wecome to CI 6130

Dear Students: Welcome to CI 6130, Contemporary Issues in Curriculum and Instruction! I am looking forward to working with all of you. I hope this course will prove to be both rewarding and enriching and that it will help you develop in your careers as educators. I will provide a full syllabus shortly; but let me give you some basic information on the course to start you off on the right foot.

Since this course is primarily an interactive seminar, you will be engaged each week in discussions and presentations aimed primarily at developing instructional skills and enhancing your understanding of curriculum related matters.

I will do the first three sessions to give you an idea of presentation methods and processes:

Week One, Course intro. Curricular choices and options: How they are made, why they are made, and what impacts them

Week Two, Engaging the student: How curricular options impact learning

Week Three, Holistic approaches: Learning for all students, knowledge that is accessible and success driven

Following this, students will engage in interactive presentations which will take us through to Week Fifteen, when we will review for the exam which will then be held the last session, in Week Sixteen.

Course expectations and guidelines:

1. Attendence at a minimum of 80% of the course sessions

2. Submission of a reflection, via a comment on the blog post provided each week, including your thoughts in a short paragraph or two on what you have learned each week with three application ideas listed after the paragraph. You are asked to submit these for 10 of the 15 sessions only.

3. Submission of a research paper with an application of a curricular area of your choice to educational practices (8-10 pages, double spaced, times new roman 12 point font, APA format).

4. Presentation to the class with a partner (or possibly three per group, course numbers will determine this) using an area in curriculum and instruction, should include activities, followed by facilitating a panel discussion as outlined in class. This is to be interactive and involve contemporary processes.

5. Completion of a final exam. We will review the broad areas of coverage the session before the exam so please make sure this is NOT one of the classes you miss!

You may decide to do your application paper on some aspect of your presentation in order to combine things for the purposes of efficiency. This is perfectly acceptable.

Here are some suggested topics for potential application papers or presentations that you may want to consider looking at (but of course you are free to choose your own, just discuss/consult by e-mail with me first):

A. Creativity in curriculum, how to design and incorporate it
B. Discovery learning
C. Marzano's work on curriculum design and taxonomies
D. Anderson's revision of Bloom
E. Applying Bloom in effective curriculum design
F. Socratic questioning, what is it, how does it work, how can we use it
G. Metacognition and learning
H. Learning styles, how to incorporate them into curriculum choices and design
I. Multiple intelligences, how to incorporate them into curriculum choices and design
J. Spiralled curriculum, how to design and use it
K. California's standards and Thai national curriculum: A comparison of methods and applications
L. How culture affects curriculum choice and design

That's enough for now, please comment on here if you have questions.
