Hi there! Thanks to Khoa, Dennis, and Cue Mei. Good presentation guys! I enjoyed the activities you had, especially the one wherein we need to guess the action. It was really fun! Socratic is th oldest form but still the most powerful when it comes to teaching tactic for fostering critical thinking. Looking back to the "Discovery Learning Presentation" we had, 'Socratic' is a part of "Guided Discovery using Socratic Dialogue" and "Inquiry Discovery Learning". In general, Socratic questioning can be used to facilitate discovery in pursuit of truth. It encourages students to reflect and think independently and critically.
My Applications: 1) I will apply Socratic questioning and challenge my students to work cooperatively to construct meaning to a given hypothetical situation. 2) I will encourage my students to come up with questions of their own. 3) When I ask questions, I will always remind myself to link the new and the prior understanding of my students.
P.S. Dr. Andy, We thank you so much for your extended efforts....
Last week's presentation was a good effort. Sorry I forgot to bring in my camera again. I think that they activities used were enjoyable and tried to give us a learning experience. The socratic method is a teaching method that I rarely get to use since my students are in kindergarten. However, when used wisely, it can produce fascinating results- that give students that "AHA!" moment. From the discussion last week, I can say that it mostly involves questioning and answering, a dialogue between student and teacher, with the purpose of students coming to the answers or conclusions on their own. My applications are as follows:
1. Play games that encourage socratic questioning like "Charades" that was played in class (the one where we had to guess what the action was), and instead play it with the kids in the kindergarten.
2. Use the socratic method to introduce the lesson to the children. I might not say at first what we are doing in class, but gradually explain it to them. I might use this in my music class.
3. Use the socratic method in correcting a child if he does wrong. Usually in my school, if kids get into an argument and get into a fight where one wrongs the other, I think I can use the socratic questioning. For example, if a student does something that is not right, I might ask, "Do we do that to our friends?" or "Is that being nice?"
The last presentation was really wonderful as well. Good job!! Khoa, Dennis, and May~~~the way they present let me understand well what is Socratic Questioning. This method is mostly used in higher education especially for students to think logically, to verify the various points of view. Teachers should not give too much knowledge or information, but using organized and structured dialogue to enable students to think through dialogue to explore and know well the subject knowledge effectively.
My application: 1. I’ll use clarification questions, such as: “You mean?”, “Can you explain in a different way?” or “Can you give me an example to explain your opinion?” So students can clarify their ideas more easily, and be able to get more ideas about the topic we are discussion about.
2. I can use it as “Treasure Hunt” games, so students can realize what our goal of the lecture is, and learn how to get further information.
3. Let students question themselves and find out the answers by way of discussion.
14 week reflection The 14Th week , Khoa, Dennis and me work together for the topic :Socratic questioning .Thanks Khoa and Dennis for you helps and effects .very glade to worked with you .thank you ! and Doctor Andy gave us pertinent feedback and powerful suggestions. thank you Dr Andy . Socratic questioning is one of very useful teaching methods ,was applied thousands years in education ,nowadays was utilized also ,especially in legal education and salesmen training . just as its name implies ,Socratic questioning is a method of teaching that asking questions instead telling, lead students thinking deeper and deeper ,and get answer by student self . The significance of Socratic questioning is foster students become a critical thinker /learner .
Applications : 1,Socratic questioning is disciplined questioning .When I apply in our teaching process ,I must prepare before class .At first , confirm what’s the goals of this class ,and how to questioning ,how to operating ,and how to lead students thinking by questioning ,theses factors must to be take account to . 2, Different students level need different level questioning , different education background students need different questioning .for example, elementary students’ knowledge structure majority focus on the basic level and there are more memory require , very limited analyse ability .so ,when I arrange questioning ,more focus on connecting of knowledge , No One-sided analysis. 3,Broad scope of knowledge for students is very important .Socratic questioning can help students develop their scope of knowledge .so , I will give some assignments (homework ) by questions ,students must think more / deeper ,or studying according questions by themselves to broad scope of their knowledge .
"Socratic questioning"; a great topic for a teacher to work on. I said to work on because I think to be able to use Socratic questioning successfully, we need to practice a lot. It is really a wise way of questioning. The questions are not just simple "what, when, where" questions. They are mostly like "how can you relate this...?" "what do you think about this....?" "What alternative ways can you think of?" type of questions which gets students think deeper and draw out the answers by themselves. And the teacher has to plan these kind of questions in advance in order to lead the students in the right direction for their learning. It helps students to be independent thinkers so that they can be able to solve any kind of problem that they might face all through their lives.
My applications:
1)Try to use Socratic questioning in my lessons as much as possible as it is really effective in teaching Science concepts.
2)Prepare worksheets with the questions that requires critical thinking and get students work on them in pairs and then share with the rest of the class.
3)Once my students are used to Socratic questioning techniques I can encourage them to ask similar questions to their peers.
The presentation of the last group on Socratic questioning was good. The activities were also good particularly the “charade”, and the information presented were all useful.
I believe that Socratic questioning is a very effective teaching tool to develop students’ critical thinking skills, and can be applied to all subjects.
In teaching Mathematics, here are my applications of Socratic questioning. 1. I will use this questioning method to evaluate my students’ understanding of the topics we are learning. 2. I will also use this method to help my students discover reasons behind and relevance of the mathematical concepts. 3. I will also encourage my students to bring up any questions they can think of for clarification on the topic being discussed.
Unfortunately I wasn’t able to attend the presentation last week, but I applied Socratic questioning on Ben to discover what I missed. It sounds like everyone had great fun last week so congratulations to Khoa, Dennis and Cue Mei. My applications are:
1. I will encourage my students to adopt the idea of Socratic questioning so they think deeper about the questions and hopefully don’t just accept the first answer teachers tell them.
2. The idea of not explicitly telling students what the lesson will be about if used correctly can really keep them focused at the beginning of classes.
3. The idea that we shouldn’t always assume group decisions are the best is interesting and both us and are students need to be aware that sometimes the final decision has to be ours.
ocratic Method is a dialectic method of inquiry, that uses cross-examination of someone's claims and premises in order to reveal out a contradiction or internal inconsistency among them. Hegel's dialectic, which he usually presented in a threefold manner, was vulgarized by Heinrich Moritz Chalybäus as comprising three dialectical stages of development: a thesis, giving rise to its reaction, an antithesis which contradicts or negates the thesis, and the tension between the two being resolved by means of a synthesis. Hegel rarely used these terms himself: this model is not Hegelian but Fichtean. The Socratic method is considered to be a negative method of hypotheses elimination, in that better hypotheses are found by identifying and eliminating those which lead to contradictions. The method of Socrates is a search for the underlying hypotheses, assumptions, or axioms, which may subconsciously shape one's opinion, and to make them the subject of scrutiny, to determine their consistency with other beliefs. The basic form is a series of questions formulated as tests of logic and fact intended to help a person or group discover their beliefs about some topic, seeking to characterize the general characteristics shared by various particular instances. Aristotle attributed to Socrates the discovery of the method of definition and induction, which he regarded as the essence of the scientific method.
Application: - Using Socrates questions to evaluate study outcome - Using Socrates questions to led students learn how to learn - Using Socrates questions to create critical thinking of students
The class started off really well when our three presenters made us match the countries with a few key people. Socratic questioning, something which I had heard about but wasn't really sure at the beginning of the class but now feel a bit more confident with this topic. My applications are:
1) When I learn myself I can try to apply the socratic questioning techniques to help me be more metacognitive
2)I can develop questions for critical thinking in the classroom to make sure my students really understand what I'm teaching
3) Encouraging students to adopt this style of questioning in their lives also so that they all can be effective learners!
It was great reminiescing about past lessons and how they have affected me over the years! It was also great to learn and hear different perspectives and reviews about Socratic Methods.
Key Points that you made that reinforced my thoughts and reflections on how to apply the Socratic method of learning and thinking were
1. It is so true that 85% of people do not want to think! Therefore you must lure them-just like fishing- into opening up their mind and taking a bite! Once you have them hooked you can guide their teaching! 2. The Socractic method must be balanced in the average student setting so that as you said a " balance" is established between hard logic and enotions and feelings! It is very easy to hurt, intimidate and anger the student ( or in my case the client) and appear unconcerned and/or unlistening.
Finally, my own reflection is that using and learning the Socratic method changes not only the student; but also the teacher! If you want to apply this method reflect on whether or not you want inner changes to yourself as well.
Thanks to Cuimei, Khoa, and Dennis. Good presentation guys! I enjoyed the activities you had, especially the one wherein we need to guess the action. It was fun! Goldbach's conjecture is one of the oldest unsolved problems in number theory and in all of mathematics. It states:
Every even integer greater than can be expressed as the sum of two primes. Discrete geometrySolving the Happy Ending problem for arbitrary n Finding matching upper and lower bounds for K-sets and halving lines The Hadwiger conjecture on covering n-dimensional convex bodies with at most 2n smaller copies Ramsey theoryThe values of the Ramsey numbers, particularly R(5,5) The values of the Van der Waerden numbers General algebraHilbert's sixteenth problem Hadamard conjecture.Existence of perfect cuboids Thanks!
It is so great and valuable time to study with you. Last our group presentation was like that due to your first presentation which I have drew experiences and applies to my task. In fact, it is a great topic that I had found out when we worked on it: searching for information, collecting data and evaluating relevant knowledge. We had tried our best to fulfill our task though there were some things I hadn’t really made them clearer. After the presentation, Dr. Andy's feedback and yours pointed out advantages and limitation that really benefited us especially myself. On more time, thanks very much for your valuable sharing and suggestions.
Application,
1. Socratic questionings really struck me because of its deep meaning and scientific sequencing and suggestion. It makes people have to go deeper in their thoughts and concepts in order to ask right and critical questions. I will apply this method to my study. Know how to ask and search for meaning of each issue from basic and easy questions as Socratic suggestions.
2. Regarding students, I will begin a lesson by asking them simple and easy questions that have relationship with students' live or concerns then step by step guide them to what I would like to talk with them. How to encourage learners' curiosity is one of factors I really pay attention.
3. I will give more chances to learners to make questions no matter what it is right or wrong and clear or complicated as long as they are eager to ask. Doing like this I will know learners' though and understanding, then correct or guide them to ask meaningful questions.
