Please post reflections for week eleven here, thanks!

  1. This week, we learned about developmentally appropriate practices (DAP). It was such a well-organized and informative presentation. Thank you for your efforts, Coya, Tina, and Gina. I learned that incorporating DAP is especially important in early childhood education, and that early childhood is a crucial period for entire life of a person. In DAP, teachers become guides for children to discover ideas and help them pursue their interests with open minds. I teach adults (university students), but through the fun activities in the presentation, I could understand how young children think and learn. It was really interesting.

    3 applications
    1) I really liked the left or right activity. It was a fun way to start presentation. I would like to use this activity in my class as well. I would make review questions and do this activity at the beginning of class to let my students remember what we have learned in the previous lesson.
    2) Although DAP mainly concern early childhood, I think these ideas are also important in all levels of education. For my university students as well, I do need to consider age, individual, and social appropriateness when I plan my lesson.
    3) Looking at the presentation, I realized that how you present the content is as important as the content itself. The way I present (such as voice tone, posture, eye contact, and movement) really influences how students receive the information. In order to get my students’ attention, I would try to make eye contact to every student, speak clearly and deliberately, and move around when necessary.

    Thank you very much.

  2. DAP=Definitely Awesome Presentation! This week we all learned about developmentally appropriate practices. The presentation was full of lively, fun activities and games that engaged us and truly helped us to understand the main point of the presentation. We learned that if we truly want to empower our students to learn effectively then we first need to understand how they learn and develop as they grow older. If we don’t get this basic foundation then it is going to be very difficult to develop learning goals and objectives for them that are appropriate for the various ages and grade levels. We learned that we need to create a learning environment with content, activities, and strategies that are appropriate for the child’s level of development. We can’t expect children to learn what they are not ready to learn or to do things that they are not ready to do. This is extremely important when teaching younger children especially in kindergarten and primary school. We need to consider our students age, each student’s unique individuality, and the cultural and social context of the students we are teaching. The team also explained and shared many examples of strategies and ideas for how we can effectively implement developmentally appropriate practices. I want to say a BIG thank you to Coya, Tina, and Gina for a very good presentation that I know helped all of us in many ways.

    Application:

    1. I immediately went back to my class the next day and tried a couple of the games and activities that we did in the presentation with my class that I teach. I felt the activities were very appropriate for my students, and they worked really well! The students really enjoyed themselves and were very motivated to learn as a result of those activities.

    2. I want to go back and do a thorough review of Piaget, educational psychology, and child development as a whole so that I can have a better foundation to create more developmentally appropriate practices for the grade level and classes that I teach.

    3. I was reminded once again by Dr. Andy’s feedback of how important our delivery of content is to our students. We speak volumes by how we say and present things. It’s not all about what we say. Actions speak louder than words. So I want to make sure that I am a lot more alert and careful about how I deliver content or implement a lesson in order to impact my students in a much more positive way.

    Thank you!

  3. Thanks for a great presentation. I have never taught younger learners, but the presentation was so well organized I now appreciate the skills the teachers of these students must have. The way the abilities of students at different ages were identified and the tasks they can be expected to do was very enlightening. The whole idea of making school a positive enjoyable environment is crucial for all learners and it’s important to remember as teachers this is one of our responsibilities. The first team activity really did have me thinking like a 5 year old and it made the presentation very meaningful for me.

    Applications:
1)I loved the PowerPoint presentation. The idea of having links to the videos was great because it meant the application didn’t have to be closed down and reopened and kept the class attentive. I liked the style of the slides and I intend to use some of the ideas next semester.

2)All the activities were relevant to what we were learning. During the activities I really appreciated how Coya, Tina and Gina gave us ideas and encouragement. It’s important to remember to monitor our students and to help them.

3)Being creative!! Sister Rose with a few sheets of paper and a few minutes created a fun role playing activity. The final activity was very open, but with a clear objective and I intend to be more creative.

It’s Obvious Coya, Gina and Tina put a lot of effort into the presentation and I really appreciate the hard work.

    Thanks a lot

  4. DAP-Developmentally appropriate practices is crucial in order to get successful results in the education of students. It is really important to introduce the new knowledge in the right timing so that it can be understood by the learner and also another point is that the way you introduce the knowledge should be appropriate and at the same time interesting to the learner.
We know that it is really difficult to convey a knowledge to the learner if they are not ready to get it according to their level of development; so we should always consider our students' cognitive and social development level while we are teaching and try to choose the appropriate activities according to their levels.

    My applications:

1)Spend more time on evaluating my students developmental levels both socially and cognitively in order to differentiate in my teaching.
2)The left and right activity was great and I really want to use it in my teaching
3)The Feedback: I was planning to write about the importance of the feedback since the beginning of the class; which I was not that aware of its importance before these presentations. Now I think that, without an immediate and detailed feedback it's nearly impossible to improve our learning. From now on I will be more concerned about giving the right feedback to my students. Thanks Dr. Andy for your fast and amazing Feedback in every presentation.

    Thank you

  5. This Tuesday,it was our group's Presentation. Our group's Presentation topic is Designing curriculum to incorporate developmentally appropriate practices.Through this Presentation,we know DAP can use for early childhood and teenager. We not need to force children to learn, or to teach them learn.children of varying ages (2-8) are learning during normal play, without having to be sat down and "taught" anything. After Presentation ,Dr.Andy give some useful advice for us.The advice can help us to improve our Presentation skill. Thanks for Dr. Andy’s feedback.

    Application:
1.Children actively involved in play may be engaged in a variety of activities, independently, with a partner, or in a group.

2.As a teacher,we need to encourage children to ask questions, explore, and discover through play and rich experiences with engaging materials.

3.Assessing children's progress can inform our work with children by showing us what they are able to do and where they still need assistance.

    Thank you.

  6. It's been another great week for all of us!!! Congratulations Gina, Coya, and Tina!
First of all, I love the "left/right" activity,I guess that would be an interesting game for my Matthayom students too!
In DAP, basic skill acquisition is learned through play which is very important in child's development (cognitive, social, and psychomotor)
In DAP, children are encouraged to interact with the materials in the environment, as well as with teachers and peers while they master the skill (as to what we've seen in the video shown) So I guess, school and learning centers should be able to provide the necessary materials and experienced teachers for this kids who are so fragile and are just beginning to learn, explore, and discover new things.
    My Applications:
    1) I will always see to it that my students don't just sit down in my class. I will include role play, improvisation, simulation, etc. when planning my lesson. These are important tools to enhance their learning process.
    2) Defining vocabulary and describibg actions-these are quite hard for my students. Therefore, aside from showing pictures (using powerpoint), I will also introduce authentic materials or characterization games, in this way, it would be easier for them to understand the lesson.
    3) I will monitor my student's progress and give them the necessary advice to improve on certain aspects.

    Thanks and Cheers!
    Evan

  7. Again, we all came across another powerful topic and wonderful presentation on last Tuesday. What a great effort all three of you had made Coya, Gina and Tina! Some theories you had chosen and your topic is really consistent. Through your presentation, I came to realize that Developmentally Appropriate Practices and designing the curriculum for kids are really significant for all children because they can affect their future adulthood education. In their childhood stage, teachers should apply curriculums or subjects that enhance students' thinking, intelligence, creativity and language so that they can perform better in their future education. Moreover, I impressed Dr. Andy's timely feedback because, I believe, providing timely feedback to children after their performances is very effective in their future learning.
    Applications;
    1. When I teach children, I will initially investigate what are their interests or preferences.
    2. Then I will choose subjects or curriculums that are suitable to their knowledge level and that can promote their thinking, creativity and intelligence.
    3. After every performace or activity, I will provide timely feedback in order to elevate their learning.

  8. Great reflections! A couple of ideas: Though we may think more of DAP in terms of younger learners, it actually applies throughout the learning process at all ages. We adjust what we are doing to match the age and development level of learners, that is the essence of it. I commend David's practice of trying something we have discussed right away to see how it works. That's the best way to begin feeling comfortable and confident with these concepts, try them out! I apologize for being a little late getting this post up this week. Truth is I simply forgot to do it. Best Wishes all!

  9. Thanks for my classmates~~ our presentation was smoothly and successfully done, thanks for my partners Gina and Tina also. Gina and I am not a teacher of young children, so we spent a lot of time to collect information to make our power point complete. Since Tina is a teacher of young children, she provided a lot of experiences and knowledge to us.
I learned a lot interesting knowledge and useful experiences from this presentation. Although I was teaching kids for only half year, I think I may perform better if I teach kids again in the future by use DAP.
    My applications:
    1. Lead children learn while they are playing. The class should include activities, art, or materials that are opened for them any time.
    2. Always listen to children, let them express their own thinking, experiences and what they want to perform.
    3. Coordinating the different interpretations between parents and school, so the DAP can be participate completely.

    thanks for my classmates' feedback~~

  10. Wow… one more practical and meaningful lesson I learnt from the presentation of Gina, Coya and Tina. Your well organized and prepared topic drew and engaged my learning. Your topic - developmentally appropriate practices (DAP) was presented creative and understandable way. At the beginning of the performance you drew my attention through decision-making and participation excitingly. The process of gaining knowledge is stared at several ways that must be creative and interesting. Following this lesson not only helps me focus on the body knowledge but it also reminds me learners’ psychology. Thank you very much for your hard working.
    Application
    1. I will prepare my lesson that I will share with students carefully. It means that each time taking the floor to present knowledge is a wonderful moment to me because the way of teacher’s presentation will engage students or not. I will keep learners enjoying learning through active games at some first minutes.
    2. I will pay attention to understanding learners’ psychology and emotion in order to match my emotion and their emotion because the increasing of learners’ attention is a very important and foundational factor.
    3. It is useful to me when one more time, Dr. Andy’s feedback is about the voice, tune and gestures. It does not always do well your task. Practicing basic presentation skills and preparing lesson are the vital requirement that enhance the ability and quality of teaching.
    Thank you and cheer…

  11. I would like to thank you all of you for your feedbacks and thank you Dr.Andy for your suggestions.

As Coya said, I and Coya do not have any experiences of teaching kids so we have tried hard to research as much as we can to share with you on the presentation. In addition to Tina teaches kids, she inspires us many techniques and activities which are used in her real practices.

    From the presentation I have learned a lot from the class and Dr.Andy’s constructive feedbacks, so I would like to share my applications with you;

    1) I’ll apply “So what” technique to develop my mapping when I design curriculum or projects, it will be a useful tool to outline the curriculums or the projects systematically and logically.

    2) When I have further group presentations or group projects, I’ll be aware of well balanced roles of each team member.

    3) As Dr.Andy posted, DAP is not limited to use for early childhood, we can apply it for other groups. I think the concept of individually appropriateness should be applied in small group training as well, the training programs should be more tailored made for attendees and as a result there might be more engagement in the training programs.

    Thank you for all support,
    Gina

  12. You did it! Gina, Tina, and Coya, your great efforts in helping us understand DAP was outstanding. The early childhood development age is a crucial important. This is age level 0-6, where learning begin (physically (large motor skills and small motor skills develop), emotionally, and cognitively). If children are develop appropriately, the child will growth maturely and healthy person. It is a very sensitive period for growth and development. If children are not being taught or nurture during the sensitive period of learning, it will take much effort to correct or teach them the basic skills that is needed for their age. For example, ask a 2-year old child to build a house using small lego. This is inappropriate because their fine motor skill have not yet develop. They will either put it in their mouth and use it for other way or get frustrated because they cannot do yet. That is why the NAEYC in the U.S take this age-appropriate development serious. They spent lots of money to provide training for teachers and caregivers to provide the right learning experience that they need to grow developmentally and healthier. They also provide guidelines to help teachers to look out for that sensitive period, that means when they ready.

    1. I realized how important that children sensitive periods, be able to provide for the need at the right time. When we want to do something really bad, we will strive for it no matter what. It's the same with kids. They're like sponge when it the right moment came.

    2. I enjoyed the activity of moving to the right and left. That's good way to teach child left and right and making choices and able to move around meaningfully.

    3. Teachers play an important role, motivate children, get them excited about learning, even on a dry subjects. Help them wanting to learn, to like school.

    thanks,
    Sr. Rose

  13. Successful presentation and interesting “left/right ”activity .through the presentation I know the Developmentally appropriate practices (DAP) is approach to education that focuses on the child as a developing human being and life long learner. This approach recognized the child as an active participant in the learning process; a participant who constructs meaning and knowledge through interaction with others, friends and family, materials and environment. The teacher is an active facilitator who helps the child make meaning of the various activities and interactions encountered throughout the day. Children learn best when they have real materials they can manipulate. The early childhood education and early childhood special education is the importance of meaningful learning experiences.
    Application :
1, I realized that the children’s leaning in anywhere and any time ,learning with teachers ,families ,peers , environment, tools , activities ,even experience ……
not just in the classroom .in the future ,I will not require child sit in the classroom all time ,I will arrange more interesting and appropriate place and activities to promote children to understanding .
2, Appropriate materials play a important role in the children’s learning process .
I will prepare more materials in the classroom ,and encourage children utilizing .
3,Integrated method is more effective in teaching and learning process .In my experience ,Chinese character learning and teaching is a big big challenge ,but I utilize the flash and video when I teach, children feel more easy and more interesting ,and I utilize plasticine when require children writing the character according to the stroke order .I will continue utilize the integrated method in my teaching in the future .

  14. Great Job Gina!Tina and Coya!

Developmentally Appropriate Practices (DAP)for children is extremely important! I mostly teach Mattayom but do have some children I teach and classes in the age group 0-6 years old-Acctually my students range between 4-7 years old but I have had children; and as a Parent I realize and acknowledge the necessity of appropriate material and especially developing a desire and thirst for lifelong learning!

However, as usual, I am cynical that its importance is defined by what was explained in class!
Let me clarify! Teaching and education are controlled and used as a tool by governement to control and pacify its constituency! If there was not a basic level of education giving those underpriveleged at least a chance of future success then there would be revolution and chaos!

To clarify Remember the Pink Floyd song "Time"? It's key line-" No when told us when the race had begun!" and society has left them behind!

This is what I believe Developmentally Appropriate Practices is in reality designed to do! Give all these children - the un priveleged - a clear line -a defined starting point so that all agree they had a fair chance to succeed! Thereby avoiding the social unrest that would be created by a class that otherwise would have have no chance of social improvement ( similar to feudalism and slavery) which always throughout history has resulted in revolution.

I will use these lessonss to:

    1. Enable my students to be well prepared and strive to be lifelong learners!

    2. I will definitely use the left and right exercise -it is very fun and tangible with visible results!

    and
    3. Most importantly, I will use these prctices as a father educating his children!

  15. Thank you for a really fantastic presentation. It was obvious that a lot of thought time and energy went into it. I thought it was a really professional done particularly in regards to the PowerPoint presentation. I loved the games and thought you played well to your teams strengths.
In terms of applications I have been encouraged this week to include more games in the classroom.
I has really brought home the importance having fun is in regards to motivation levels.
I look forward to reviewing the PowerPoint as I know there are lots of ideas I can take from that as my skills are quite basic at the moment.
Thanks again for a wonderful presentation

  16. Thanks to Tina, Coya and Gina for another interesting presentation. Their first activity of left and right was a very interesting way to reveal their topic. Developmentally Appropriate Practices (DAP. It focuses on developing life long learners. With the young child it is always good to incoporate plays into their lesson plan. As at this as dr.andy mentioned in class it is very important for the students to enjoy learning this will have a long-term
effect on their behavior towards learning.
    - As my personal preference is to educate young children i would definately try my best to incoporate learning while playing.
    - Student's today loves discovery learning, so while assigning homework or classwork i would give them more choice for completing their homework. For example, the topic is Culture, students could come up with songs, pictures or text to pass their message to their classmates.
    - It is intesting to know from the above comments that DAP can be adapted to different group of students, so i would do futher reading.

  17. Thanks to all the three presenters for doing a great job in getting us familiar with DAP. DAP helps us teachers realize the fact that every student learns their own way and also that every student has talent. Although nowadays talent sounds overrated, it is necessary for teachers to understand that the talent in students might seem less, but if picked up correctly and nurtured well, students will do great in the future!

    1) The whole left and right activity in the beginning was nice which I can apply especially for younger learners and many enjoy moving around.
2)I need to make sure that my teaching style and content suits my audience. It''s important to understand Piaget's developmental theories.
3)I agree with Sr. Rose's application about students being like a sponge by absorbing the information if it comes to the right moment. Time is very important. If students are not ready then your lesson will not be a success,

    Regards,
    Laxshmi S

  18. Thank you so much for the class.
I think age is the key in curriculum. if we design our teaching in only one form, but we use it to teach all the students, that must be terrible.
1.I teached middle school before. And I alway give the so much knowledge to deal their exam. Now I moved to teach in primary. Students told me they can not receive all the knoledge I gave them. At the beginnin, I really angried with them, I thougt they didn't work hald. So, I think, it is the time to change.
2.I love the activity left of right. It is a very interesting game. I will use it in my teaching. Review the knoledge.
    3. I took the vedio when I was teaching. I found I didn't use enough bodylanguage. I will change it.
    Thank you for ladies.
