  2. Shift happens! That says it all. What a fantastic presentation last night! I was really impressed guys and was really impacted in a very positive way. Olivier and Ben really were really able to get the point across that our world is changing so rapidly and we as teachers and the educational system as a whole are changing with it and need to continue to do so. The videos really supported the main premise of the presentation and truly added to the positive impact of a very powerful presentation. The games and activities kept us engaged throughout and continued to review and focus on cultural changes particularly in technology and how they have impacted schools and curriculum over the years until now. I love how they also incorporated a lot of what we have learned in prior presentations into their own presentation and so wonderfully tied it all together. Great strategy to draw on prior learning! Culture and technology are two of the major factors that have been and will continue to impact and affect curriculum and instruction throughout the years. I appreciate Dr. Andy’s encouragement that we as teachers and educators are keeping up and are successfully making changes to keep up with technological advances and technology’s impact on curriculum. I do feel that we as teachers need this reminder that we are trying and working hard and we are improving and getting better and better. At the same time I feel we still have a bit of catching up to do in the area of technology and how to apply it effectively in our curriculum planning and subsequent instruction. This was a very wonderful and high impact presentation! Thanks Ben and Olivier! It was in one way a wake up call and in another way greatly inspired me. It was great fun as well! Cheers!

    Application:
    1. I really want to take the time to include more games and activities in my lessons that tie everything together and engage the students in fun and exciting ways as Olivier and Ben so tremendously demonstrated for us last evening. I know it takes a tremendous amount of time to plan and prepare but the positive impact on learning is so worthwhile!

    2. I will try to make much more of an effort to connect what I am teaching daily to prior learning. I think this is such an important strategy and I need to do it much more. It is very beneficial for our students for review and to see how so many things are connected and work together.

    3. I will try harder to keep up with technology and integrate it more and more effectively in all my classes so that the students will become more interested as they see that what we are doing is really connected to everyday real life and is truly preparing them for the future even though the jobs they may have don’t even exist yet. Cool!

    Cheers.

  3. What a fantastic presentation!!!! Congratulations Olivier and Ben!
I can say that, as a teacher, we can "wow" our students with our knowledge with technology- something new to see and use... and definitely this happened to me last Tuesday! Kinda' mesmerized... until now! Pretty amazing!
Actually, technology is a way to draw student's attention to the same material from a different angle. I can still remember, I used to be tech"newbies" struggling to learn computer basics. I was in the Philippines that time, our principal had to hire computer specialists. According to her, we need to adopt to the new trends in technology and integrate it to our lessons. She also added that the world is constantly changing and we must be able to cope up with it. Well, most of the teachers, we're not interested simply because they didn't want "change." However, we all need to comply with the requirements of the school.
In general, I've learned that, whatever the culture is, the use of technology in the curriculum plays an important role in helping students to achieve their full development potential.
    My Applications:
    1) It's nice to share ideas and share for new ideas on how to integrate technology into the existing curriculum. I will create and design my lessons in such a way, that the students would be able to use technology and work collaboratively in the classroom.
    2) I will introduce web quests in my class and carefully choose a topic suited for their age level and culture, this is one way of increasing their motivation to learn, it will also serve as a window to their imagination into the unknown and enhance their creativity and class work.
    3) Technology of interactive voice recognition, CD's for listening, recording my own voice (similar to the robotic one!) can very well help my students, especially those who are struggling in listening and speaking. I remember the activity wherein Dr. Andy wore this funny eye wear and just followed the robotic voice.
Moreover, In one of our subjects, we studied "Curriculum as a process"- in the classroom, I can see technology as a process that defines and nurtures the way culture, teacher, students and knowledge make connections or interact with one another.
    Thanks and Cheers,
    Evangeline :)

  4. week 10 reflection
Olivier and Ben gave a wonderful presentation – edutainment, lively, light-hearted ,and fruitful. My deepest impression ,as video showed , Science and technology updates and develop faster and faster, education was impacted greatly.
more and more new technology apply into educational activities .At the same time ,teachers get more help and face more challenge in education .How to apply technology into education effectively is serious matter that every teacher must to consider .Dr Andy’s encouragements are so useful for us that as a educator or instructor must to improve capability to keeping up the technology advance and applying into educational activities effectively. Regardless of the technology develop highly ,students’ developing is the educational main goal.
    application :
1,I felt the edutainment method is lively, light-hearted, and students can get more than expected. In the future I will try to arrange more content-connecting activities in the teaching process .Students central-oriented way will adopted as far as possible , encourage students share their thought and learning methods.
2,Nowadays ,we are in the age of information explosion, grasping and applying the key information and useful information in curriculum development is very important and necessary .
3,When I implement my curriculum ,I will try my best to guide or teach students how to utilize technology to service their learning .for example ,when I give some assignment to students ,I will tell them they can seek resource on the internet as they can .

  5. Thanks for the wonderful presentation, Ben and Olivier. For me, it was very interesting to learn how English education in Japan has changed over years. In the academic year of 2011, English education is to become compulsory in public elementary schools in Japan. Although many elementary schools have been teaching English in 5th and 6th grades, it was not compulsory. (There was a controversy on whether it is necessary to make English education compulsory in elementary schools. Some thought introducing foreign language before children establish their mother tongue will deteriorate their Japanese skills.) But now, many think that English skills (not only grammar and reading but being able to speak and communicate in English) are very important for children’s future. I think educators’ efforts to revise curriculum still continues in order to keep up with globalization of the society.
In the presentation, it was also eye-opening to know that the years which took new technology to be implemented in the classroom are getting shorter and shorter. As Dr. Andy mentioned in the class, educators are definitely making efforts to incorporate technological changes in the classroom.

    3 applications
    1) I thought it was a good idea to put students into groups and let them compete for points throughout the lesson. In this way, students pay more attention to the content of the presentation, and it makes the lesson much more fun and engaging.
    2) I thought the video clips used in this presentation were quite interesting. I think those visual materials have strong impact on student learning. I would like to use them as effective aids to communicate the ideas to students.
    3) I would like to give my students more opportunities to use technology in the class. But at the same time, I think it is important to use it when it is appropriate.

    Thanks a lot.

  6. How important role of teachers are! As teachers even we are living in the rapid changing world, we have contributed a lot to the growth and development of young people especially students we are teaching them. What we have in our hand such as modern digital technological tools, are the only instruments to support our teaching and student’s learning. Skilled teacher will know how to use those tools to benefit their learners. Students are learning better and enjoying their learning longer. I learnt many lessons from you through your presentation. Not only lessons about the content of the development of technology and their application in education but your activities and performance drew on my attention and engagement. That is so great. Thank you and congratulation Ben and Olivier!
Dr. Andy’s attendance, encouragement, and presentation skills and all of our classmates’ last presentations remind me to improve much more what I need to master in order to be able to teach learners efficiency and creatively. To keep learners interested their learning, and meet their needs of learning are so important tasks for me. Thinking of these elements, I have to train myself each day and by day.
    Application:
    1. Using materials that belong to a specific culture to teach learner. Because they maybe see, touch, and use them daily but learner need to understand their meaning and their value in life that are taught by teachers. The classroom environment is very suitable for enriching knowledge.
    2. I will maximize to apply multimedia to teaching English because nowadays, English learning and using modern technology are very fundamental and important keys for the development of students’ thinking skills and communication skills. At the same time, teachers help them prepare for real life after graduating.
    3. Maximizing creative and active learning in class such as: group discussion, peer learning, and team work. As a teacher, I not only teach them but I also learn from them. Collaboration takes an essential role in teaching and learning today.
    Enjoyable moments,

  8. Ben and Olivier presented about how culture and technology impact curriculum. It was a great presentation. I really enjoyed learning about the timeline of technology in the classrooms. It used to take years to incorporate technology in the classrooms; however we are incorporating latest technology (either hardware or software) in our classrooms. The video Ben and Olivier showed in the presentation made me realize of how important it is to be a teacher. Teaching professions is sometimes criticized and mocked often, but what teachers contribute to society is often undervalued. It was great to hear an encouragement from Dr. Andy that teachers are flexible and we are trying our best to keep up with the changes in technology.

    Application
    1) Students today are growing up in a world that is changing more quickly than ever before. Our students need to think outside of the box because they are being prepared for the future that we can hardly imagine.

    2) I also want to get more training on incorporating technology in the classroom. However there is a lack of resources (equipment and training) but we can encourage our administrators that technology gives us a positive impact for our students.

    3) I also want to create my own class blog (may be on blogspot) where I can post homework, school events, and other important announcements.

  9. Reflection # 9

What a wonderful presentation, Ben and Olivier. It was very interesting to learn how technology affects the curriculum. At first I thought The presentation about culture would include the religious and ethinic background and how it affects culture. But seeing your presentation I was struck and amazed. The Video "Shift Happens" was just the perfect way to describe the topic. It was nice to see how our education system adapts to technology and makes use of it. It was just great. Before entering the class I saw an advertisment about iMBA infront of the building. It was e-learning through IPad. It was really amazing. And then the topic about technology was presented in class. It was a nice co-incident.

Olivier and Ben it was a wonderful presentation ...I love it!!

    3 Apllications:

    1. I will create and design my lessons in such a way, that the students would be able to use technology and work collaboratively in the classroom.

    2. I totally agree with Zarni in creating a class blog for posting comments and homework. Just like how Dr. Andy has incorporated it in our classes ... I would love to do the same with my classes.

    3. having an ICT couce in the curriculum has helped students knowledge about technology. With this it has become alot easier for teachers also to teach as much information and resources can be given online.

  10. Last Tuesday, I really enjoyed the class both of Dr.Andy’s session and a great presentation from Olivier and Ben.

Dr.Andy talked about a quote on leadership behavior and he encouraged us to link it with our teaching job, leadership is not related with business only, being a teacher needs leadership skills as well.

Then I was very engaged with Olivier and Ben’s presentation, they balanced content and activities very well and the activities were impressive. I like the last activity; answering the period of implementing technology in education, this activity practiced us to think logically to answer, it was not just guessing but it was analyzing systematically. Thank you so much Olivier and Ben for your powerful presentation.

    Here are my applications;

    1) I like the idea that Olivier and Ben created the activity to let us recall prior learning and I will apply it in my training classes to help my attendees to apply prior learning with new knowledge.

    2) I think I can empower my attendees by using the technique of Oliver and Ben to let them think, analyze logically instead of describing.

    3) I will apply what I have learned from the quote “Are you here with a problem or are you here with a solution” that Dr.Andy discussed with us. I will keep it in mind that I will be more aware when communicate with my attendees, if it goes in the appropriate way my attendees will interact with open-minded and as a result there will be good collaborations.

  11. Wow! Such a dynamic presentation. Thank you very much. The fast pace of activities made time past so quickly, and at the same time very enjoyable. The presentation had really inspired me. It's an eye opening for me to see how fast technology had impacted on the history of education through time and is faster everyday. I agreed with David that it's a great idea to incorporate prior knowledge and tied it into the lesson.

    Applications

    1. Technology had made it possible for us to find resources to learn as well as to teach right at our fingertip. I would use it more to make it effective in my planning lesson for my students.

    2. After learning this session, I would attend more to my class blogs in posting recent games and activities to keep my students interest.

    3. Technology had make it possible to have students connect with other students across cultures, it would be very interesting for me to connect my students with students from a different country to exchange ideas or to join in a project together.

  12. Thanks again for your very informative presentation, Olivier and Ben. Your presentation revealed the technological changes of industrialized countries that affected to the whole curriculum around the globe. Moreover, we had learned some factors that vitally influence on curriculum through your presentation. To me, political factors and economical factors are the major factors that mostly influence on curriculum effectiveness. At the same time, your presentation positively reminded us that we, as teachers, should always be alert with the technological changes and adopted those changes suitably into our daily teaching career.

    Applications.
    1. In order to teach my students to be more effectively, I will remind myself to be up to date with the latest technological changes.
    2. I will teach, especially history subject, by comparing or explaining with the past events and current situation.
    3. In science subjects such as chemistry, physics and biology, I will use some modern lab materials to be more practical.

  13. Thank you very much for the wonderful presentation,Olivier and Ben.I think several factors affect all curriculum development in meeting the needs of 21st century learners in both organized academic settings and corporation learning centers. So I like this topic"How culture affects curriculum choice and design", We may come from many different places, areas, or countries,we have different culture. The culture influence the types of topics and methods for teaching information.Olivier and Ben tell us more and more new technology apply into educational activities,I think it is a very important thing. As a teacher,we must learn more computer technology.

    Application:
1.The computer technology of the 21st century influences curriculum development at every level of learning.we can use PPT,blog ect teach students.

2.Allow your students to determine your teaching curriculum by polling them at the year's end to find what they love about their studies. Use this information for the next year's teaching methods.

3.Next time,I design curriculum,I need to think outside of traditional curriculum to affect students positively.

    Thank you.

  14. It's real an amazing presentation. Thanks for handsome guys Olivier and Ben.
This presentation was very interesting.First of all,we were seperate to 3 groups,Blue,Red and Green. And we saw a video about different definition of culture from different students.Because the "Culture" is a huge notion so we just can catch some point about it.They choose some part with the technology.
Second they introduce how English education in Japan has changed over years. In this part i learn some things about the process of the English education in Japan. And i was think about the preocess of English deucation in China.English just one of the some subject. So we can learn something about the subject development in some areas, because the culture is the biggest background. Caused different area have different culture so there must have some different.
There was an interesting thing, they showed us a technology timeline. They introduced the development of technology.Like when the computer appearance and the internet appearance and so on.In that technology timeline,we can found every important machine and know the time they appearance.

    Applications:
1.At the class begining,Dr.Andy metioned a question:"Are you have with a problem or are you here with a solution?" This question is about the leadership. This is a leadership behavior and he explianed to us and let me understand that in the process of education teacher needs leadership skills also.It real let me think more about the necessary skills of a good teacher.

2.In my opinion, this presentation is so great and amazing! In this presentation there have many activities, but these activities are not fun only but also purposeful and useful. After these activities we can learn more things from these activities and these acitivities contact to content of topic.I think if activity can help student learn something from it that's good activity.

3.Actually,my topic is same of this presentation. I waw discussed with Ben personally and he told me that because the "Culture" is real a huge definition we just can choose some point form it.And he told me,they just want everybody can join and enjoy their presentaion,it's their's purpose. They hope everyone can have fun,can learn, can understand at the same time. His view real give me a lot of inspiration.

  15. Great Job Fellas - Fantastic presentation! It was amazing to see how the pace of change within technology and implementation of change into the curriculum has speeded up. I am a bit of a 'luddite' and resist the urge to involve technology in my classroom, but your presentation has highlighted that maybe I should look to embrace it more.

    Applications:
I thought the teamwork between you too was great and I loved the games you got us playing. I think I will use this approach and get the students working competitively in teams in the class.

We have a new multi-media centre and I will investigate how I can use the technology there to enhance the curriculum. I have used it for research and I will try to build on this further.
    Thanks again!

  16. It was a really interesting presentation this week, congratulation!! Olivier and Ben.
I especially love the part that described the implementing technology in curriculum, I was very surprise that people using technical equipment for curriculum since more than hundred years age.
Moreover, the other impressive part of their presentation was the English education in Japan. Although I am not good in these history events, I try to figure out what should be the event, and I was learned a lot.
In another hand, I also want thanks to Dr. Andy for his interesting story when we discussed the history events, and also what Dr. Andy mentioned the leadership skills that a teacher should learn.
I was very enjoying in this presentation!!
    My applications:
    1. Teachers are the most important technical equipment in the classroom. Doesn’t matter how fast the technology growing, teachers should always update their knowledge and skills for their students.
    2. Using technical materials is a tendency for future education. Thus, I’ll learn more about how to apply and integrate the materials into our curriculum. Also, try to guide students to use technical materials to learn more or search information they need by themselves.
    3. Different culture leads different learning behaviors. The most important point for me to learn is try to understand different learning behaviors from different culture, and be able to adapt and adjust my teaching methods.

  17. Last Tuesday, Ben and Olivier's presentation about culture and technology and how it affects education was great! One of the activities still vivid in my mind was the timeline activity. Also it was interesting to see the comparison of when the technology was created and how fast it was used in the class. It seemed like after the 60's the use of technology in the classroom sped up. It kinda shows that when a new technology is created educators are quick to see the value in it for education.
One of the things I also remembered in class was the chart in presentation that Dr.Andy made a comment on. I think he said that teaching is a profession that is keeping-with-the-times (so to speak) and that it is often trashed by different books and media, but that it is a good profession and one we should be proud of doing.
I think thats true, I remember the video about Ken Robinson and how he basically described how education today kills creativity. I think that is changing. I mean educators are aware of the changes we need to make for sure and we ARE changing. I think it's a great idea to be a teacher.

My three applications are as follows.

    1. From the presentation, I saw how technologies are being incorporated to the classroom. For kindergarten, the use of technologies to teach children are often used as well. Like in my kindergarten, we use CDs, Video, Interactive books, and computers. We have yet to use Powerpoint, which I'm hoping to one of these days. I plan to use Powerpoint for my music class, incorporating music videos, songs, and pictures!

    2. I think it would be a good idea to learn about what new technologies are available out there to use in the class room. There are a bunch and some we learned about in the ICT class... I think however, that if we ask the kids today we can find out more. One of the ideas for our Wednesday presentation was this website called Edmodo.com, I had no idea about it. I asked my brother and cousin who are both 13 and they told me ALL about it. I think its always a good idea to find out what's relevant to the kids these days.

    3. Refering to Dr.Andy's comment, find ways to think positively about the teaching profession. There's alot of stuff out there that really says that teachers now are doing the wrong thing, but I think if we look hard enough we can also find lots about how educators are impacting the future.

    That's all. Thanks.

    Micah

  18. I was reflecting on your comments and I realised that I havent used class blogs in my teaching. So voila next school year the blogs are on my menu.

Thanks a lot for your positive feedback; it is always good motivation.

  19. The topic was interesting and the way Ben and Olivier presented it was excellent. I enjoyed the activities and learned a lot on how technology evolved in the classroom. Teachers can provide more engaging and interactive exercises to students by integrating modern technology in the classroom. And this integration will definitely reinforce the effectiveness of the instruction and provide better learning opportunities for the students.

    Here are my applications.

    1. I will incorporate more often modern technology in teaching my students to make the learning process more interesting.
    2. I will also encourage my students to use modern technology in research and presentation projects.
    3. I will also do, once in a while, some sort of mini competition among my students in group activities to create a more challenging learning environment.

    Thank you.

  20. Okay another great presentation! Thanks Ben! Thanks Olivier! Technology has grown to such an extent that a world without paper or files is not only forseeable in the Future but is entirely plausible . As such any current trend or thought of Education and views (similar to old technology) maybe obsolete and definitely needs to be revised.
The problem as I see it as in today's world technology and methods of collecting, analysing and implementing information are changing so very fast that ,as was referred to in their seminar, a vast majority of what is learned in Year one will be obsolete by graduation!
As I see an educator has 2 choices: 1. to try to stay abreast to current trends or 2.to rely on Traditional methods used to develop our minds and society to the point it has reached today and to continue to guide us to further points in the future!
To attempt to change lessons to reflect these changes of technology to any efficient degree is not only impossible at today's growth rate but deadly in Consequence if done incorrectly!
As it is impossible to develop timely strategies of implementation and evaluation Method 2 should dominate as it has collected data on implementation and success!
As such I believe ABAC may have fallen done a slippery slope in its current implementation of class and design where one can not even obtain a syllabus without trying to find on computer!

    Applications
    1.
Technology as it grows todays should not be used or reflected in most classes as these classes over history have been designed to foster the mind and skills of individuals not masses as most technology is designed to deal with!

    2. I feel thei is a danger to students who can not --either by lack of opportunity or finances afford to maintain any rate -MUCh Less the Progreessive rate of technology today!!
As such they will be unable to grow and be cast aside.Education as an objective is designed for all-supposedly ( some of you know my views about government control-discussed before!)

    3. i hope and pray that Techniology(-except for clean energy and space travel) will come to a standstill or slow growth ( similar to any growth pattern) that will allow myself and other teachers to find efficient means to integrate technology into the classroom while still allowing students to develop their own personal mind skills, ability and individuality!

    GOD BLESS US ALL

  21. I couldn't attend Ben and Olivier's class on culture and technology but what I think form reading the above comments and also getting information from my friends who did attend the class:

    1) Although technology has helped us alot comparing to about fifty years from now, it also brings on it's own challenges. If I use technology in the classroom, and giving an assignment relating to that would be effective, but I also need to make sure that it's not too much to ask from students especially regarding the technology that every student has access to.
2)Using technology with its optimum value benefits teachers, but when you teach something to students and especially if you give students assignments to do then if you're not an ICT teacher, you might go offtrack regarding the content the subject teacher needs to teach
3)However, technology usage in class is also fun, and if you can hit the iron when its hot, then students learn alot.

    Regards,
    Laxshmi S.
