Reflections Week Nine

Please post reflections for Week Nine here, Thanks, Dr. Andy

  1. We all enjoyed another great presentation last night on metacognition. It sounds like a big, complicated word, but it was all made fairly simple for us when it was defined as thinking about the way we think. Thinking in a metacognitive way is so important when it comes to learning. We learned that metacognition is basically concerned with monitoring our progress as we learn and then developing strategies to learn better when we find we are not doing so well. It has everything to do with self and more specifically self evaluation with the goal of improving the ways in which we think and learn. It is all about setting goals for our learning, planning, self-monitoring, and evaluating ourselves to see how we are doing and realize what changes or improvements we need to make. Laxshmi and Eva explained it very well when they said it is all about directly involving the students in the learning process rather than just having them focusing on senseless rote memorization. It’s all about getting the students’ actively involved and engaged in learning and then having them reflect on their own learning and develop strategies on how to think and learn more effectively. I really enjoyed the overall game theme and all the activities that went along with it. It was a very creative way to model the do’s and don’ts of what they were sharing. I believe we all had a lot of fun and left much more equipped to reach our students much more effectively.

    Application:
    1. I am going to try my best to give my students a chance to reflect on what they already know and what they want to learn by using graphic organizers like a K-W-L chart. Then from this I want to give them a chance to set their own goals for their learning.

    2. I want to create more opportunities for my students to do self evaluation from which they will have a chance to highlight strengths of their learning and also create plans to improve in areas where they might be a bit weak. This self evaluation will help them have a say in the learning process and will help motivate them in my opinion.

    3. I want to make every effort to include more games and cool activities like we did during this presentation that help keep students’ motivation high and also help them develop metacognitive strategies at the same time.

Thank you Laxshmi and Eva for a great and exciting presentation. It was very informative and helpful. Thank you Dr. Andy for the valuable feedback on the topic and on the presentation. Well done!

    Cheers.

  2. Laxshmi and Eva gave a great presentation last night, there topic about metacognition was clearly explained and demontrated through their activities. Although they ran out of time it was one interesting presentation.

    - Ask open-ended questions to make students think. Encourage students to think then memorize.
    - Give assessments in such a way that it covers all types of areas and encourage self-assessment
    - As a teacher, i would use more time to plan so that i can improve my method and help students eventually become independent learners.

  3. Reflection # 8
Last night was another great presentation on metacognition by Laxshmi and Eva. Metacognition the word itself is big but laxshmi gave us great examples on it. We all knew what metacognition was from our other classes but last it gave me a clearer picture of how our thinking ability works. Thinking in a metacognitive way is so important when it comes to learning. We had learned that metacognition is basically monitoring our thinking ability as we learn. One thing that struck me was what laxshmi had said that metacognition is all about setting goals for our learning, planning, self-monitoring, and evaluating ourselves to see how we are doing and realize what changes or improvements we need to make. And if I am not mistaken the second activity which was to see different things in the box and try to remember as many as possible was really good as it had reflected the concept of metacognition directly. It involved planning and memorizing strategically. Overall I would say great job..!!
    Application:
    1. I want to give my students a chance to set their own goals for their learning.
    2. I totally agree with David here that we should create more opportunities for our students to do self evaluation. This self evaluation will help them have a say in the learning process and will help motivate them.
    3. I would also try to understand my students learning styles so that I can plan my lessons accordingly. If they are novice learners then I should have a lot of activities that help my students remember and make them feel that it is easy, on the other hand if they are expert learners I would plan my lessons differently.

  4. It was another great week for us having Laxshmi and Eva as our presentors. Congratulations to both of you! Everything that they've talked about plus the activities were interrelated with one another. Excellent job!
Metacognitive knowledge includes knowledge of general strategies that might be used for different tasks, especially the knowledge of "self". The metacognitive and self-regulatory processes are well represented in tasks such as checking, planning, and generating. All of these factors are necessary in order to be called a successful learner. For example, in doing their assignments in reading, some of them might think that by reading the story that was given is already enough but for other students, it's more than reading, and therefore, they put or exert considerable amount of effort in checking their comprehension as they read. Some of the students with high metacognition, even take note of the difficult words and look it up in the dictionary without the teacher telling them. I can see this in some of my students. I can tell, how are they trying their best to figure out how to do a task and also, this what we call "self-monitoring".In here, I can also see their fexibility and genuine approach to solve a problem.

    My Applications:
    1) I will give my students more opportunity to use their metacognitive skills by asking (oral) them questions in recalling information. I will also discuss with them the importance of asking questions, this will develop their high-level of thinking. In addition, I will create a combination of multiple choice and essay type (actual recalling of information) of test. I think this would be better than just giving them a multiple choice type of test which only aims on the recognition part of what they've learned.
    2) I will plan a lesson and think of activities that will move their interest and arouse their awareness of thinking towards better learning.
    3) With regards to self-monitoring, I will introduce a project, in a diary form, a place where they can write their learning plans and activities- they can even include time requirements, how are they going to organize the materials needed, procedures, etc. My son used to do this when he was in high school up to college. For all I know, one of his teachers, gave them this idea. But its worth it, I really saw the difference.

Note: Please take time to go to this site and read it- for language learners (EMPOWERING YOUR STUDENTS WITH LEARNING STRATEGIES-NATIONAL CAPITAL LANGUAGE RESOURCE CENTER)
    http://www.nclrc.org/guides/HED/pdfs/chapter3.pdf

It has many topics such as: Metacognition: Teaching Students how to think about their learning, under that you will see subtopics- How do I introduce my students to metacognition?,etc. Also, there is a Sample self-assessment

    Here's another one- http://academic.pgcc.edu/~wpeirce/MCCCTR/metacognition.htm

Have a look classmates, it's very informative :)

    Thanks and Cheers,
    Evan

  5. Metacognition is an essential part of learning process, and Laxshimi and Eva helped us understand what it is and how we are actually using it through various activities. I learned that metacognition involves understanding how I think, monitoring my own cognitive processes, and knowing how I could learn in the most effective way.
I had known the idea of metacognition, but the differences between cognition and metacognition became clearer for me through this presentation, and there are other new concepts and ideas which will be useful and which I would like to apply in my teaching. Thank you very much, Laxshimi and Eva.

    3 applications
    1) I will try to help my students become expert learners. In order to do this, I will need to teach them how to learn and make them become aware of their own learning processes.
    2) It was useful to know how teachers can possibly reduce students’ motivation. As Laxshimi explained in the class, giving too many multiple choice questions in exams or letting students use only one problem solving skill can reduce their motivation. Also, assessment should be relevant to what students are actually learning.
    3) I would like my students to become self-regulated learners. However, as discussed in the class, accurately judging and monitoring oneself is not easy. Therefore, it should be balanced with perspectives from others. I will help students become able to monitor their own learning but at the same time, I will try to give them advice when necessary.

    Thanks a lot!

  6. Last Tuesday we came across one of the most important topics in effective teaching through Laxshmi and Eva's presentation. They vividly clarify the meaning between cognition and metacognition. In fact, their topic "metacognition" is very significance both for teachers and students because it involves monitoring and reflecting on their current thinking since most of the teachers don't even realize what they are teaching nor do students about their learning.

    Applications.
    1. In order to promote students' critical thinking skill, I will emphasize more on understanding rather than memorizing the subjects.
    2. I will teach my subject with an example that is similar to the subject to be more understandable.
    3. I will give my students an opportunity to set their goal, adapt their knowledge and apply their strategies to be self-regulated learners.

  8. It was another enjoyable presentation this week, and I would like to say thanks to Laxshmi and Eva, they did a very great presentation. They mentioned the differentiation between cognition and metacognition let me understand more and learn how to apply in my class. After their presentation, I learned that teachers are not only transferring information to students, but also guide them how to organize the information for future using. I also learned that metacognition involves thinking about one’s own cognitive process, which leads students think about their own thinking process, identify their learning strategies and evaluating their learning behaviors.
    Therefore my applications are:
    1. Teach my students how important self-regulated are. It can be used in their learning, as well as their future jobs. Once they can manage their learning, as well as they can manage their jobs.
    2. In order to let students know how their learning effects, I’ll get their feedback right after class. Furthermore, I prefer to guide them know how much they learned and what should they need to enhance, not just tell them the correct answers.
    3. Although every student’s learning strategies are different, I’ll remind them what they should have to do in a specific point of time, so they can keep analyzing and changing their learning behaviors.

  9. I used to think cognition and metacognition is the same and I could not see the difference between them. Thank you Laxshmi and Eva for your presentation and congratulations for the excellent job you did!

Refer to Laxshmi’s analogy, she used a pyramid of vision level; CEO’s vision represented metacognition while vision of subordinate of the CEO represented cognition, this good analogy helped me to understand clearly about the difference between cognition and metacognition.

In order to strengthen our understanding, Eva provided us more details on cognition and metacognition and I appreciated the way that she always gave us examples,
She gave us a metaphor of cognition that we know something (facts or information) for example; we know it is called a laptop (using cognition) but if using metacognition we would think and analyze why it should be called as a laptop.

    So now I understand metacognition more and I will apply it as these applications;

1.) I found that metacognition described as self-regulated process and it can empower learning so when I train my attendees I’ll try to encourage them to use metacognitive skills; let them analyze, think logically to generate knowledge by themselves instead of just tell them directly.

2.) I learn that if I let my attendees to set their goals and allow them to evaluate and monitor their learning by themselves, It’s metacognition and their learning could be maximized however there is some drawback on self-evaluation and self-monitoring as well, because of individual bias so I will try to balance with using self-evaluation concept and using standard evaluation or benchmarking with others.

3.) The activities that Laxshmi and Eva used in the presentation very creative and interrelated with metacognition concept; counting letters and memorize things in a box, it made us realize how important planning and well organizing is so when I train my attendees, I’ll think and find activities which will make the attendees understand what are objectives and key learning from the activities.

    Thank and cheers,
    Gina

  10. Thanks to Laxshmi and Eva for the great presentation. Metacognition plays a critical role in successful learning; therefore it is important for both students and teachers. Sometimes it is hard for metacognitive skills to teach to younger students, but we can be their models by saying our thinking process out loud and students can learn how to learn.
    Application
    1) Memorization: There are some concepts and facts worth memorizing and the activity we did in class made me realize that when we are in a group and try to help each other, it helps us a lot to remember and we can share what we know with one another.
    2) Role Play: Role play is a great way for kinesthetic learners since they learn best when they can physically involve in the learning process.
    3) Self-regulated learning: We can train our students to be self regulated learners. They understand the concepts and try to develop the learning strategies to accommodate their own needs and constantly assessing themselves.

  11. Thank you very much for the wonderful presentation, Laxshmi and Eva.Your presentation topic and the ways you present fascinated me very much. Before this presentation,I knew the word "metacognition",but I don't knew the meaning. After this presentation,I knew metacognition is the individual with the psychological process and later supervision, adjust, guiding myself to a intended purpose ability.Metacognition, is for cognitive cognition, specifically, is about him individual cognitive process knowledge and ability to regulate these processes of thinking and learning activities: the knowledge and control. Metacognitive including metacognitive knowledge and metacognition control,On cognitive activities of self consciousness and self-adjusting.I think Metacognition is more important to success than cognition.

    Application:
1.Teachers can help students according to the teaching targets, and care each student's own characteristics, like learning foundation, personality traits, cognitive style etc, and making out suitable learning goals.

2.The teacher can help students draw up a plan according to their learning goals.

3.I liked the second activity, everyone try to remember the things in the box.We can see
book ,CD,ect in the box. When the activity finished,we try to write down the things we see.I think this is a good way to train our memory.

    Thank you.

  12. Thankyou all for the wonderful comments and definitely thanks to dr. Andy for the very valuable feedback which will surely help me in excelling!

I enjoyed presenting the topic of Metacognition. Although in the beginning it was hard to select topics and activities as it's a very broad topic. Metacognition's like the father of cognition and here self-reflection is very important. We had 3 activities: 1) Counting letters: It was a paragraph which had the definition of Metacognition, basically a fun activity for students who don't like a lot of theory. 2)Memory Box: Was a depiction to show that students face a lot of pressure regarding memorization and if they fail in a test because they couldn't remember, teachers classify them as weak students which is not true. 3)Role play: Wanted all the students to reflect their understanding of the session through a drama created by the students.

    My applications:
    1) I would emphasize students to concentrate on how they learn rather than just what to learn as we want to develop independent learners and not robots.

2)Students' beliefs are very important when it comes to learning. Developing a positive attitude is very important to ensure effective learning.

    3) I would encourage teachers to encourage and teach metacognitive skills to their students. If students can learn how to control and manage time from now it will definitely be a value added tool for them for the future.

Again, thanks to all for all the support and thanks to dr. Andy for the feedback and encouragement. I have a funeral prayer to attend tomorrow evening, so see you all in class next week! Will be waiting to hear about Olivier and Ben's presentation tomorrow!

    Regards,

    Laxshmi

  13. I think it was a great presentation last week. Thanks to Laxshmi and Eva.
First of all, they gave us a question:"What do you think is the different between study and learning"? I think it's real a important question about the topic. They helped us understand the differentiation between cognition and metacognition.I learned more knowledge from this presentation. It's real useful to apply in the class later.
I real like that explainiation of the Metacognition."The metacognition is how to learn, what thinking about thinking, knowing about knowing." It's explain so easy to understand. In my opinion, the notion about the "congnition and metacongnition" are very professional and abstract, when i first touch them, actually i couldn't understand them at all.But now i can understand better, because they explain them in a easy world and simple way through this presentation.
I have to say the activities were so wonderful. There is the prepose of each ativity. And there is a activity always through the presentation. It could concact the all content. And other activities are very useful to help to improve the topic. These activities make fun and help us to understand easier of these knowledge.

    Application:
1.In this presentation I was not only understood the basic notions of the "Cognition" and "Metacognition" but also understood how to us them in my actual education.I understood that a teachers are not teach the all of information to students, but to guide them how to learn the information and how to use these information futher.
2.There is an activity which i like best.Everyone try to remember some things in a same box in a short time. That's an activity about memorize.Evryone just have one chance to watch and in this time we can not to write them down, just remember them. And after all of members over to watch,we just can write them down in a paper. That real a great method to practice our memory.
3.I learned a very inportant thing from this presentation. That is "how to help student to create beliefs?"It's real improtant for education. If a student give up to study, that means it lost all sense of education. So how to help student to create the beliefs of study is very important and useful. The belief of learning can help student to stir up the motivation of learning.

  14. The presentation on metacognition was interesting. Laxshmi and Eva gave us concrete examples and situations which helped me better understand the topic. The activities were fun and enjoyable, especially the memory box. There are lot of things I learned from this presentation and my applications of what I have learned are as follows.

    1. I will emphasize to my students that it is very important for them to be aware of the process involved and not only the product of the process. In solving a math problem, aside from memorizing the formula, they must also focus on how the problem is being solved. I will also encourage them to find out other ways of solving it which will give the same correct answer. I will encourage and teach my students to become independent and successful thinkers.

    2. I will discuss with my students (grade 10-12) about the Self-Regulated Learning. I will explain to them the importance of goal-setting and planning, taking into account their time constraints, strengths, weaknesses and motivation for learning. I will encourage them to adapt, if possible, this learning technique.

    3. I will give my students opportunities to self-monitor their learning strategies. For example, I will give them immediate feedback on their tests so they will be able to reflect on their learning strategies, analyze the mistakes they made, and plan their study strategies for the next exam.

    Thank you.
    Emil

  15. nine week reflection :
last week we enjoyed a powerful presentation from Laxshmi and Eva about the : metacognition and learning .they gave clear explanation for metacognition through
compared cognition and distinguish two conceptions’ differences and connecting and content-connected activities .
metacognition is “knowing about knowing ”,so ,metacognition is very importation for the teaching and learning ,teaching students how to thinking ,how to get the “knowing ”are goals of education . through the activity Rote memory we know this method is not good method for teaching and learning , creative thinking must to apply in the learning and teaching .
    application :
1, Chinese character teaching ,traditional method was have applying thousands years ,that is learner was required to memory thousands Chinese characters by copy them again again and again .In the future ,when I teach Chinese character s , I will apply more integrated methods ,for examples ,more flash to show the Chinese characters’ developing and evolution .especially for the pictographic character. This method involved students’ thinking
2,I would like to give students more free and more space to thinking ,encourage students to self-monitor learning .
3,Making teaching plan before class ,in the teaching plan arrange thinking-oriented activities .

  16. I love the show so much. Thanks to Laxshmi and Eva gave us the perfect time. From it, I get so many knowledge and teaching method.
    1. I will tell my students to try to self-regulated. It is important to everybody.
    2. I should collect the feedback after class. there is no one perfect, me too. I need to know how much the knowledge can effect the students’ life.
    3. I love the game that memory in short time. I am going to use it in my new words teaching.

  17. Wow, it looks like I missed alot! I wasn't there last week due to a doctors appointment but I can tell it was an awesome presentation. I was just reading a couple of the reflections above, and I'm going to pick pieces from each that I read. I think it was interesting to read that a part of metacognition was self evaluation and assessment. I think that's a good thing to practice. I actually didn't know that it was a part of metacognition.

    1) I guess in my situation, I think it would be a bit more difficult to teach metacognitive skills. I teach kindergarten and similar to Zarni's reflection, I guess one of the ways a teacher would make their younger students be aware of their thinking process is to say it out loud. I guess that would be one of my applications also. For me I teach English phonics to Japanese children and it helps if they can say the sounds of the letters out loud and try to mix it with another sound to create a word.

    2) I saw that in Laxsshmi's reflection she did three activities including one of role-play. I like this activity especially with the younger ones. I think it gets them more involved. I also did not know that it was part of metacognitive training. For me we use it to teach English conversation. I guess it helps students think about what situations they might use the conversations they learned in class. It really gets them involved, and some times you can even see on the kid's face that they're thinking about what to say.

    3) I also saw in Preet's reflection that she would try to understand each student's preferred learning style to help them learn better. I think that's part of the metacognitive process too. I mean if a student can understand which way he learns best then it would help. It would be hard to do for younger kindergarten students, but I think it's great to do with older elementary aged kids. For me, I would have to take notice through careful observation of my students of which ways they learn best. And try to fit activities that speak to each child.

That's all for now. Sorry I missed your presentation Laxshmi and Eva, I'm sure it was a good one. I hope to watch the video. :)

  18. Last week’s presentation was quite interesting and fun, at the same time we learned a lot about “metacognition”. Basically it’s being aware of our own learning process and thinking on it in order to improve our learning. It leads us to being self regulated learners which is actually the key to success. Also Laxshmi and Eva clearly indicated the differences between a self regulated learner and a novice learner. Evaluating our own learning helps us to see if there is something wrong and gives us the opportunity to find better ways to learn effectively.

    My applications:

    1) Encourage my students to analyze their own learning and create their own ways for themselves to get better outcomes. Work individually to get them self regulated learners.

    2) Try to overcome the beliefs of my students such as “Math is hard, I can’t learn”. Get them monitor their own learning and have a positive attitude about their own processes.

    3) The activity about remembering the things in the box was great and applicable to my students. I will definitely use it in my classes.

    Thank you

  19. I really enjoyed the presentation by Eva And Lakssmii! Metacognition is so important!

    1. I will use the definition of "Thinking about Thinking" to my students because it is easy to remember and explain in a way the students can grasp.

    2.
I will design lesson plans so that students can reflect and understand not only their expectations but also the means so that can do self evaluation of the thinking processes involved in their learning.

    3. I believe that the means and methods particularly through games and classroom exercises must be carefully designed so as to highly motivate the students to use metcognitive processes in their learning. I will ateempt to involve and motivate my students to do so.

  20. Mega-cognition topic sounds big and complicated, but through the help of our presenters: Laxshmi and Eva had made it down to earth and interesting especially through the games and analogies. Thanks.

    1. I am inspired to use more activity that will motivated my students to learn about my teaching subject.

    2. Self-regulated and novice learners styles is crucial important in order for learning to last. This help me to reflect on how I learn and will definitely help me students to established this routine.

    3. Thinking about mega-cognition, I think I can help my students to push what they've learned in my religion class to a higher level of making it practical in their lives as well.
