  1. Thank you very much for the wonderful presentation, Emil and Martin. I will be able to apply many things I learned from this presentation in my class, and it will help me teach my students more effectively. In the activity where we constructed a definition of differentiation, my group came up with the definition as “adjusting and tailoring teaching in order to reach all the different levels and needs of a variety of students.” It is important to use differentiated instruction in a class since every student has different preferred learning styles, motivation levels, social backgrounds, and levels of abilities.

    3 applications
    1) I would try to teach in a way that helps my students use all three different learning styles (visual, auditory, and kinesthetic) in my class. As discussed in the class, although many students have preferred learning styles, it is better to be able to use all three styles. It will be also useful to let students do learning style inventory so that they know how they like to learn.
    2) I would like to use graphic organizers or mind maps when I teach Chinese characters or new vocabulary. (Each Chinese character has meanings, so it will be connected and organized well using graphic organizers or mind maps, and it will help my students learn new letters and vocabulary.)
    3) I liked the last activity (putting given sentence strips in a correct order as watching a video clip). This activity can be used when I teach Japanese poems or stories. This activity will help students organize and understand what happens in what order in a poem or story.

    Thanks a lot!

  2. Hi everyone. Another great presentation from these two handsome guys! Congratulations Martin and Emil!
In differentiated instruction, a teacher gives activities that are suited to the needs of the learners according to their mixed ability levels, interests, backgrounds etc. In other words, DI is all about using teaching strategies that connects with the learner's way of learning.

In this day and age, some students struggle with learning, some of them cannot cope up with their lessons, assignments, projects
etc. Teachers are all different in so many ways, and so with the learners, therefore, it is helpful for a teacher who wants to become more effective at differentiation to remember to balance his or her own needs with those of the students.
A teacher could have a better chance of keeping the learners on task all the time, if he or she knows the learners' profile. In reality, 'Maria' is different from the other students, these includes the kind of personality, behavior, ability, backgrounds, etc., so that learning must be differentiated to be effective. The activity which we had (Cooperative learning- You Tube part) which Martin and Emil gave is one good example of differentiated instruction. By the way, I really enjoyed that activity. To Martin and Emil, thank you for that wonderful experience!

    My Applications:

    1) In this challenging time, let's reflect on the different kinds of students that we have in the classroom. Using tiered activities through which all learners work with the same important understandings and skills, that will give them different levels of support, challenge, or complexity.

    2) I will try to know my students through interest inventory, interview, or ask them to answer open-ended questions (in a form of a questionnaire) including their learning preferences. This will help me plan the kind of activities that will tailor their needs.

    3) I will create instruction that will address the different learning styles, such as visual, auditory, kinesthetic (always keep in mind the multiple intelligences by Howard Gardner).I will understand that some learners need to move around to learn, while others do better sitting quietly.
    Happy Teacher's Day to everyone!

    Cheers,
    Evan :)

  3. Dear Dr. Andy

First of all, thank you very much for the presentation of Emil & Martin. It was so meaningful because through their tasks help me have a view of creative ways of implementation of subjects to different learners’ level. There are varieties of teaching learners in order to help them actively engage their learning. The presentation reminded me to notice the ability of gaining knowledge of students: Some study well when they seat still, while others need to move, to act and to discuss with others. Each student is unique and different, therefore different styles of teaching will encourage learners to learn best when appropriated methods are chosen to meet the need of students at each specific level.

Then, Dr.Andy's evaluation and reminders recalled the ability of teachers’ presentation and creativeness in classes. To do tasks effectively, it requires teachers to know whom they are teaching and what they want learners to achieve. Emil and Martin showed us the books suited to a specific level of students as well as applying relevant theories. Pictures and video are tools help learners understand the subject clearer and more effective. Group working cannot ignore in the process of teaching and learning because it enhances learners’ cooperation and confidence.

    Application:
    1. Entering the class of 6 grade, I will ask a common question to take learners’ attention before I teach them a lesson of the meaning of water. For example: How many bottles of water you drink a day and when you drink lots of water? Each student can give a practical answer.
    2. Group working: ask each group of five students to draw pictures or to point out how people use water in life. Then if without water what will happen to daily life. ( 20 minutes)
    3. Using pictures, stories, and video to illustrate the meaning of water in the life of people, animals, species, and all kinds of trees on earth. I will guide them to find out when water is polluted it is useful or not? Then I will ask them to give suggestions to use water beneficially and the ways protect clean water.

    All the best,
    KHOa

  7. Thanks for the great presentation, Martin and Emil. We all have students in our classrooms who struggle academically and others who are doing well beyond their grade-level and the rest of the students who are somewhere in between. We have to differentiate our instructions and assessments to meet the needs of all students. In my classroom, I tend to pay more attention to the students who struggle academically and I realize that smart students are getting bored because the tasks they are doing are easy for them. Therefore it is important to have a class that provides success and challenge for all students.

    Application
    1) I need to push myself a little bit beyond my comfort zone when it comes to classroom learning environment. I really like what Dr. Andy suggested that we can have some “controlled chaos” in our classroom where students are “actively” involved in all the learning activities, therefore, students might be moving around instead of sitting quietly at their desks, but the students are still engaged in their learning activities.

    2) I will try to use of the visual, auditory, and kinesthetic channels for my lessons. I will use a variety of visual and hands-on learning activities and projects during my lessons.

    3) I will pay more attention to the learning styles and readiness of my students. Applying Bloom’s Taxonomy will be very helpful to plan different activities depending on the readiness of the students.

  8. Congratulation! Emil and Martin for your impressive presentation. Your presentation topic and the ways you present fascinated me very much. Indeed, we need to differentiate our instructions in order to identify the strength of every student. Since classrooms are organized by different types of students, different styles of teaching or instruction are very crucial to enhance their innate abilities.

    Applications.
    1. Whenever I am plannig to teach, I will teach differently in order to be more creative, effective and interesting but not to be monotonous.

    2. I will distribute some questionnaires, like Martin and Emil used, to find out each student strength. Then I will provide help according to their needs.

    3. After every instruction, I will raise a question to investigate what they have learned from the subject.

  9. Emil and Martin did a great job of not only demonstrating the theory of differentiated learning, but also treated us to a great deal of examples and activities we can apply in our classes. It seems obvious that different learners would benefit from different methods of transmitted knowledge and if I wasn’t convinced before I definitely am now. The final activity of separating the class into their preferred learning styles was a great idea and it was funny when someone noted that all the kinesthetic learners were all standing.
    Applications:

    1) As a teacher I feel I probably teach how I like to learn which makes my jobs easier, but clearly isn’t the most effective way of reaching the majority of the students. I will definitely try to present information using all three channels of learning. A great thing about Dr. Andrew’s module is being part of a different class every week and I have already experienced so many different teaching styles and activities I’m confident I can apply some of these in my own classes.

    2) I would like to try and discover what type of learners my students are. In summer school where I’m not restricted by having to give my students a paper test I intend to try and mix how I teach. Hopefully I can organize a classroom where I can offer different activities for the three learner styles. If it isn’t feasible to have a classroom with multiple activities I will change styles within the same class. The presentation has really put a fire under me in the sense that one or two styles of learner shouldn’t receive the best possible chance of an education in English because I limit how I transmit knowledge.

    3) Emil’s presentation of Gardner’s multiple intelligences was very interesting. It makes sense that there is a link between what intelligences people are stronger in and how they learn the most effectively. I would expect that someone with a high musical intelligence would benefit from audio transmission. Grade 10, 11 and 12 at my school are divided into subject classes (some classes major in math, others in art etc.) Therefore I will think about changing the delivery of the lesson depending on the strengths of the class.
Finally a very insightful question from Laxshmi about what type of learner Confucius was.

Thanks Emil and Martin for a great presentation.

  10. Differentiated instruction is such a relevant topic for all of us teaching here in Thailand especially in an international school environment. Of course I do understand it is relevant to all teachers everywhere to some extent, but I found the presentation a great reminder for me to understand and be open to the many differences that exist among my students and to be sensitive to their widely varying needs including different learning styles and preferences. I loved how Martin and Emile started off applying this topic directly to our classroom setting by recognizing the many different languages and backgrounds of all of us. That was a very interesting intro. I also really enjoyed the learning styles survey. I was very surprised to see visual come out on top for me. I love how they focused on a wide variety of teaching strategies and tools for reaching every learner and making learning meaningful to all. If we want to motivate our students then we have to understand their differences and create ways to fairly and equally tailor our instruction to meet all of their needs and stimulate all of their varying learning styles.

    Application:
    1. I want to create my own learning styles survey tailored for my students to get a clearer picture of what learning styles each prefers. Then I want to focus on planning lessons that incorporate all the varying learning styles and preferences of all my students in my class.

    2. I will try to utilize more graphic organizers and give everyone a copy rather than just putting one sample up on a screen or on the board as Dr. Andy suggested. I would also like to get my students to design their own graphic organizers which will enable them to tailor it to their own learning styles and therefore increase their interest and motivation.

    3. I will make much more of an effort to incorporate Gardner’s theory of multiple intelligences into my lesson planning and teaching strategies as I feel this is an excellent way to reach the different needs and preferences of each of my unique and different students.

Thank you Emile and Martin for a wonderful presentation and for the very important reminder to focus on the varying needs and differing styles of all my students more. It might be a bit chaotic at times but it works.

    Thanks everyone.

  12. First of all, thank you so much to Martin and Emil for a fantastic presentation.Martin and Emil taught us differentation as presented.Martin and Emil's presentation was a great help to me.They told us some methods for I teach Chinese is very useful.I teach the students come from different countries, have different backgrounds. I learn some methods for Martin and Emil's presentation,it's can help me teach chinese better and better. At last,I think In the activity where we constructed a definition of differentiation, everyone enjoy it.the activity help our understand the subject clearer and more effective.

    My Applications:
1.When I teach kids chinese, first tings,I must kown the level of kids.I away let them see pictures and try to use chinese to explain the picture,so I think Pictures help learners understand the subject clearer and more effective.
2.As a teacher, we must learn to listen to the opinions of the students, understanding the needs of the students, they want to learn what.
3.As a teacher, to constantly learning new knowledge, continually trying new teaching methods.

  13. Differentiated instruction is obviously a great way to meet the individual’s needs in education and a magical way to get splendid outcomes in the motivation of the students. Of course all of us are more comfortable and learn better when our learning style is used by the teacher. Also DI has a meaning of having choices for the students as they can choose among different kinds of assignments and projects so that they can perform better. My only concern about DI is that it is really a time consumer for the teachers; to differentiate in your teaching, needs a lot of planning and preparation . At least double the work that you do normally. But we must accept that to get outstanding outcomes we have to work harder. So it’s up to us to prefer being an “efficient teacher” or just an “ordinary teacher”.

    My applications:

1)Try to find ways to learn more about my students’ interests and learning styles so that I can tailor my instruction for every individual. This might be done by questionnaires, discussions or sometimes only by observations or trying different methods.

2)Save more time for my planning and preparation in order to work on different levels of students and different ways of teaching methods according to the needs of students.

3)Improve myself by researching more on differentiated instruction and get ideas from other teachers especially about the activities to be done, as if Martin and Emile did in the class on last Wednesday.

    Thank you

  14. First of all, Martin and I really enjoyed in our presentation and we appreciated very much the cooperation of everybody in the discussion and activities.
Differentiated instruction, for me, is indeed a very interesting topic and very useful to all teachers who wish to reach the different levels of learners. I believe that everybody in the class will agree that differentiated instruction is one of the most important strategies for effective teaching. It will also maximize the learning opportunities for the students. I learned a lot from our research works on this topic and from inputs shared by Dr. Andy and my classmates. Here are my applications.
    1. I will surely use the learning styles inventory test in my classes next term to give me concrete ideas on my students’ preferred learning styles. Then, I will try my best to provide my students a variety of learning activities to give them opportunities to learn on their preferred learning styles once in a while.
    2. Aside from the learning styles, I will also consider the multiple intelligences of my students. I will try to be as flexible as I can in designing the learning activities to provide my students some options to learn the lesson using their natural talents.
    3. I will also consider using the 3-2-1 exit cards in my classes especially after major lessons or every after each term. This will be helpful in designing, modifying or improving my learning activities for the next lesson or for the next term.
    Thank you very much.

  15. Hi everyone and congratulations Emil and Martin for your fruitful presentation last week.

I was very engaged with powerful build rapport activity at the beginning of the presentation, Emil and Martin gained our attention when started by asking the meaning of a sentence in many languages, it was very engaged!

During the presentation, I learn many things which will be useful for my job; they provided information about DI (differented instruction) to increase our awareness of curriculum planning to differentiate instructions that acknowledge each students individually, they provided us 3 styles of learning (V, A, K) which should be considered for teaching or training and lastly they conducted an interesting activities to encourage us to organize a chart.

    Here’re my applications;

    1) Both of children and adult learning style can be divided into 3 styles; visual, auditory and kinesthetic and in order to different learning styles when I train them I will use high variety of training methods to cover all of 3 learning styles to help them to understand what I have trained through their preferred learning style.

    2) As Emil showed us an example of learning style, he said if a teacher is V type, they found that 20% of K type students have dropped out so I think although I have different style from my audiences; I will adjust my training styles and training methods to approach my audiences appropriately.

    3) Refer to Dr.Andy’s comment on the strength of Emil& Martin presentation, Dr.Andy appreciated materials which were used as back up data such as text books, assessing learning. So it would be more professional if I apply this strength to my job too.

    Thank you,
    Gina

  16. As I read some of these reflections, I am reminded of Bandler and Grinder's view from the science of NLP or neuro linguistic programming, which I think I shared with you earlier: "In any system, the one with the most flexibility in the system, controls the system." That's primarily what having these varied options will give us: Increased flexibility to meet the learning challenges of our students! See you in class!

  17. Differentiation Reflection

As we are walking into the new year, we are treated with a fruitful and engaging presentation. Thank you Martin and Emil for all your hard work. It's great that you've tried to recognize your different audiences languages and make them feel comfortable as you present. It's fit right into the theme. The reinforcement of VAK, the test, the different intelligence of Garderner, and the group activity.

    1. In planning for lesson, I will keep in mind to have a balance of activities to meet the need of my VAK or different intelligence's learners.

    2. I can also use the VAK ideas in my personal life, keeping in mind that everyone have different kind of thinking or working differently --flexible and able to step back to see things in its' perspective.

    3. The VAK testing I will differently use to see the levels of theirs perspective and for them to see themselves and able to see others as well --reinforcement that everyone are special though learning different or having different kind of smartness that we could share with one another.

    thank you,

  18. Week 8 Reflections

Last weeks presentation was a good overview on differentiated instruction. I really liked the idea that all of us are "smart" in our own particular way- referring to the VAK model and the multiple intelligences theory. I think that as teachers we really have to think these while planning and interacting with our students.

My three applications are as follows:

    1. Try to plan lessons that address the different intelligences.

    2. Develop an understanding practice that as a teacher I can't teach to each individual intelligence but I have to think of the class as a whole.

    3. Begin to train students to intake informations other than the ways they might prefer because the "real" world doesn't do that. There's alot of different kinds of people and they have to learn how to get along with them.

    Thanks

    -Micah

  19. Emil and Martin gave us a excellent show.
    1. I like the style to tuning-in. I am going to use it in my teaching. No body like to be tell you should do sth, you need to finish sth or you have to read the text. But in fact they must do them, so, why don’t we change the way to tuning-in. Let them make a mistake first, or may be not too good, and then, show something about it, finally, give them the result. At the same time, students showed the mistake they most did. But I have a question, if I do not have IT in my classroom, how I can do. Just like the old priod before.
    2. I felt that I can get more understanding from a video, but I had never used it in my teaching till the show. I like the picture which showing the three different learning styles(visual, auditory, and kinesthetic). I can’t but admit that I had never paid my attention to it. I always teach students with reading. It is the time to change it.
    3. I liked the last activity. I mean putting given sentence strips in a correct order as watching a video clip. I can use it in my text teaching. Do it, students will feel they are meeting a simple project, then they can receive it more easy.

  20. Reflection week 8

Thanks for the great presentation Emil and Martin, obviously we learned a lot by their presentation. They had a good understanting of the VAK learning model and gardner's multiple intelligence and passed on the information to us very well. By giving us self quiz and making us aware of our preferred learning method it made us aware of ourselves. We tend to teach the way we learn therefore we should be aware that each student have thier own preferred learning method. The activities they choose and made us do in class was also a good way to pass on their information.
    - I would be aware that each student have their own learning preferences.
    - Differenciate my assessment to match each individual by combining many areas and breaking down to improve all areas of student's intelligence.
    - As we know we should always be creative, therefore we should keep improving ourselves to keep up with our student's interest and provoke curiousity as it increases student's motivation.

  21. Emil and Martin presented well and I think differentiated instruction is something we all need to excel in because every student has their own learning styles.
    1) I would agree with identifying the student's learning styles to know the appropriate instructional strategies
2)I would encourage students to take up the learning styles they are not good in as a challenge
3)When it comes to assessment, although its more hard work for teachers, assessment needs to be more personalized. Only paper tests are not enough.

  22. Reflection # 7

I was presented in class last week, but heard alot about the presentation from Neet. Emil and Martin presented about differentiated Instruction, which is a very instresting topic. I got to know about the activity that they had done by dividing the class into different groups according to their styles of learning which was wonderful. Great job boys..!

    3 Applications:

    1. Adapt the activity in my classroom and teach according to what student feel they can do best in.

2.Make sure the students are getting the information provided to them through different means.

    3. Be creative and try to provide differentiated instructions in class.

Looking forward for a wonderful evening today ..!!

  23. I think that a wonderful presentation last week. Thanks for Martin and Emil.
First of all, they start from an activity. So i think it's a good beginning. In a presentation,a good beginning is so important. In that activity,we can pay more attention into this presentation.
And next they begin to explain the "What's Differeitated Instruction".We can answer this question by our own words first, and they show us the real meaning. And next we learned why use the DI and how to plan for DI.Like this we can understand the "Differeitated Instruction" very clearly.
Next step is my favorse one.A very funny activity--What is your learning style? We get a reaserch form and this reaserch is to improve what style of learning. There are 3 kinds of style-visual,audio and kinesthetic. When we finished this form,we get another paper is answer, and we just accunt the point and we can find what's our learning style. This reaserch is so interesting and useful, after this reaserch i know my learning style is visual.I could learn the intuitive better. And next activity is funny too.Every kind of learning style people as a same group, and watch the same video at the same time and the 3 groups have the same material but the 3 groups should show the different ways what're they watched. The result just improve the e learning styles.

    Application:
1.I understanding the learning style in this class.I know there are 3 kinds of styles, visual, audio and kinesthetic. And by the reaserch i found my learning style is visual.I would try more practices about this learning style to improve my learning efficiency and i will think about how to use it in my education.
2.There is a wonderful example in this presentation. It's the my favoritest party. They give us a example of the language skill, this example about reading skill. In the education,we choose books to different learning style students,so what's the best way to choice? We can learn more things about this example. It's wonderful!
3.I was thinking about one thing that how teacher teaches students of different level. There are many students, they are different level, when the teacher teaches every level students they would prepare different ways.Like choose the books to different students you must understand every student you teached and find different suitable methods.I think it's a difficult things.

  24. Okay! I learned many things this lesson and think the following will help me in future life as a teacher and parent.

    1. I was not aware of the vast differences between Audio, Visual and Kinesthetic learning and abilities associated with such classifications!
I am astounded and must reconsider my whole teaching approach. this obviously will take some time and serious consideration and personal reflection to determine how much weight I should and must give to this new Knowledge.

@. Implementation of these differences in abilities will be very complex and difficult. I must dio further study and thought of how to implement these learning differences in my lesson plans both effectively and efficeiently!

    3. I thoguht and do believe for now on that I will use the exercie of having the students placing card board cut outs in order of the video shown!

it was an ingenious and very effective teaching method which I beleive will be fun for any class of almost evry age!

    ReplyDelete
  25. Thanks everyone for your encouraging words! It was great fun putting the presentation together with Emil. I think we both learned a huge amount and both feel it will impact our teaching. Just the concept that each student is an individual and deserves to an education that fits them. Rather than having to modify themselves to the curriculum.

I definitely will be using more graphic organizers.
I have also surveyed the students this week with a VAK test and plan on using this data.
Finally, I will also explore the use of graduated rubrics as this is something I feel could really encourage my students and allow them to see incremental growth in their performance.
    Thanks again
