Reflections Week One

Hi there, please post reflections as a comment on this post. Remember the format is a brief outline paragraph of something that had meaning or use to you, and three short examples of how you could use it in your role as an educator. Also, please feel free to comment on the reflections of your classmates! Thanks, Dr. Andy

  1. Reflection # 1

This week was a very nice class as I got to meet new friends and also some old ones. It feels great to get back together after a long vacation. Last night Dr. Andy gave us an introduction to the course and even told us how this class would be in the next 15 weeks to come. He also mentioned about the effectiveness of giving an instruction. It felt nice to know how things would fall in place from the very first day. Although there were a few technical breaks and errors the class was in the flow and all of us (I hope) enjoyed to know about the course and our classmates.

Dr. Andy also mentioned about "You don't have to understand everything" which was really good.

    My 3 Applications:

    1. As I am not a teacher in a school I dont go though this procedure of giving an introduction, but hopefully once I start I would love to apply this kind of introductory class in the beginning of all my courses.

    2. Humans tend to do mistakes, and some are not aware of the new technology, therefore I would keep in mind and prepare myself before class that errors can happen and are natural, but I should try to avoid them as much as I can.

    3. As Dr. Andy mentioned "You don't have to understand everything" which was really good. I feel that most of us face this and try our level best to understand the whole content but I realize that it is ok even if we don't. And I will make sure that I can tell my students that same. By which more questions and queries will follow up.

  2. Dear Dr. Andrew,

    1. It was so interesting to join the class because of your presentation and the atmosphere of friendly participants I feel eager to study.

    2. What I learned is the way you performed the lesson with using projector, writing on the board, moving around the class with eye-contact that made the lesson more exciting. You also said that: “You do not need to remember everything” that is so great because as my opinion knowledge is very important but how come it really becomes my own knowledge in order to I can use it in real situation and live what I am going to learn from you and experienced people around me.

    3. Through the lesson you mention one point that I really concern. That was the background of each learner that formed that person. Therefore, Having the chance to study with each other and share with each one is really beneficial.

    Thank you for your reading.

  3. Reflections 1

Yesterday's class was like a reunion with old and new friends! It was good to be in class again and to go through a new course with Dr.Andy. I'm sure its going to be good.

I think the set up of the class is quite interactive as we have to do presentations everyweek and I was actually surprised we got to picking all of the presentations already.

Since we haven't really gotten in to the nitty-gritty of the course yet, I've decided to post ways this course would help me be a better teacher.

    1. I would get practice teaching as I present on my topic with my partner.

    2. I would get to have a hands on experience with other teaching styles, that are going to be discussed in the presentations in the following weeks.

    3. Lastly, I would get to observe and decide which topics works best for me and my students.

Thank you. See you guys tonight if you're in ED 6060.

    -Micah

  4. A good start with these three reflections above. I will make some errors with the technological aspects from time to time because I am far from an expert in this area, so please be patient. I think I am getting the links to work, however I edited two posts to create links and only the first edit held. But with the new ones I should be able to do them as links. Best, Dr. Andy

  5. After worrying about returning to university I was very relieved to see so many friendly faces so thanks. Dr. Andy described the course and its requirements in enough detail so we understood and I think we are all looking forward to learning new techniques and theories.
The aspects of the lesson I will take with me are:
    1) Emphasize to students that it's ok if they don't know understand every word. I think sometimes I pressure the students with expecting them to remember everything which is counter productive to helping them learn.
    2) Create a positive learning environment where all students ideas are welcomed.
    3) I like the idea of having files online where students can access them anywhere. This would stop the 'teacher I lost my worksheet problem and encourages the students' parents to take an active role in their child's learning.

  6. Dear all,

Being a new student in a new school surrounded by new teachers and new classmates is always an interesting challenge. I now understand comments from my fellow students “that Dr. Andrew really makes a difference”.

    Some reflections;
1.Very interesting to notice that the majority of students are not native English speakers. That boosts my confidence for the Masters.
2.I am also very pleased with the way this course is well prepared and its blog’s support.
3.I can’t wait to see the presentations to gain and use some new working techniques.

Excited to be part of the group and see you all next week.

  7. I was very worry about my very first class in Master degree, but after I hear Dr. Andy said “you don’t need to worry about your fist language is not English” I felt better and not so nervous any more. Moreover, I see many friendly faces and Dr. Andy kindly introduced us the course, I think I can enjoy my new student life in ABAC.
After Dr. Andy described what we’re going to do in the next 15 weeks, I think I can learn many different things from not only Dr. Andy but also the other friends, I feel very great to have this class and I’m really expect the presentations.
I especially love what Dr. Andy said “you don’t have to understand everything!!” That encourage me to keep learning all the time, and I’ll try to approach it.

    My Applications:
1.Always try to let students understand what I’m talking about. We may come from many different places, areas, or countries. Language is a tool for communication but it’s not the only way to convey our thinking.
2.We all have different backgrounds, students may learn from what we teach but in the other hand we can also learn many things form these students.
3.Don’t force students to understand everything while we are teaching. Let them at least understand 20 or 30 percent this time, and we can review over and over again to make them understand more.

That’s it. Thank you guys for reading and see you next week!!

  8. What a great way to start! During the first meeting, Dr. Andy explained the overall 15 sessions of the seminar course.
-It has 2 levels: First level, learning materials, like the readings that would be posted; learning how be effective. Second level, trial and error which means: see your classmates as they do their presentations and then immediate feedback and look at the strenght of the presentation- each week we're gonna learn, repeat and apply it in your own classroom.
    -Presentations should be:
    a. more interactive
    b. if you're doing Socratic- you need to use
    socratic method
    - English level of the students- speak out
-Dr. Andy also added some concerns- like if he speeds up, just tell him
    - interactive Course- something were gonna do Example: skill learning to show about a product
-What is "Interactive"- to demonstrate how to use a productDr. Goodman also explains about the first 3 sessions- rubrics
-he commented that he's not a sage on the stage- and that students should asks open questions
-last semester, 2 or 3 students challenged him
-don't be afraid to challenged because it's very valuable for us- the insights given are very important
-Virginia Roxas- ESL expert: she said that in Thailand some of the ideas will not work
-all of us are limited because we can't go out of our own skin
    -Discussed about interactive procedures
    -he summarized the syllabus
-You don't have to understand everything
-Explanation of the general rule in the classroom like absences, reflections and 3 applications for every week
-application paper (8-9 pages/APA style)- use a piece of our presentation to writ a paper
    -Explanation of "Plagiarism"
-Google- Citation machine and son of citation machine- APA
-Showed a sample video presentation of the students: pick some of their styles: kinesthetic, verbal, visual and auditory, showed lots of interactions and fun, some students were even taking notes
-Students were able to choose their own presentation topics
    These are my applications:
    1. As a teacher, during the first day, it's always nice to start and you really feel good that you get to explain everything that the students ought to know and understand- from the rules, syllabus rubrics, to the assignments, projects, etc. I will apply this in my classroom to avoid confusion and problems in the future.
    2. I will encourage my students to be more interactive in the class, as it is fun and they would be able to use their kinesthetic, verbal, auditory and visual. This is also helpful as it will cater to the different personalities that we have in our classroom.
    3. When I teach vocabulary, I always tell my students not to confuse themselves with all the words in the sentence but rather, I want them to just remember the most important one that for them is easy to remember- the same as what Dr. Andy said- that "you don't have to understand everything", which for me is really true.
    Thanks,
    Ms. Evan

  9. Reflection #1 Wow, tonight atmosphere is like a reunion with more additional new faces. It's wonderful to be back. Dr. Andy started the class on time with lots of smile. He created a friendly and enthusiasm to learn and reassurance that we are not expected to understand everything. I am sure that this class will be great! Actually I am excited to learn new ways of teachings as our classes unfold.

    Applications:
    1. It's a great example of Dr. Andy to be ready and prepare to meet my students at the beginning of the year. An welcoming opening with friendly, and encouraging to learn no matter where you are.
    2. I also learned that it's okay to admitted to my students that I do make mistake and at false at time, but are willing and always open to learn.
    3. Even though the opening of a course we did not learn any content as yet. But it can not be without it because it's tell me that in the classroom setting, the first week of school is an essential important because my students need to know and understanding clearly what I expected of them to do throughout the year. Tonight Dr. Andy had confirmed the important of it. Also the trust level and understanding of teacher and students begin.
It's good to meet everyone in class.

  10. Well, if you are looking for somebody who does a class summary as a reflection, looks like Evan is the one! You can look above, most of the key ideas are there. Even, don't feel obligated to do this every week just because I am mentioning it here. It is very helpful for this first week, however, where a lot of ground was covered. Thanks, Andy

  12. It was a great first day of class. No blackout like last semester on our first night of Foundations of Education class. I was encouraged by what Dr. Andy said, “You don’t have to understand everything.” I’m sure everyone else in the class was encouraged by it. My undergraduate degree is in Elementary Education and I have been teaching for 3 years now. However, like Dr. Andy said, I could only keep up with 50% or less of what we discuss in class, I am lost with the rest of the topics. Education is a life long process, and I believe as a teacher I am still learning with and from the students.

    Three applications:
    1) First day of class is very important as it sets the tone for the rest of the school year. I will make sure that everyone in my class feels welcome on the first day of school, and they are clear with the rules and expectations of the class.
    2) I will emphasize in my class that education is a life long process. Students need to be aware of the fact that education does not stop after we get our degrees.
    3) Dr. Andy also stops and checks the class whether they understand what is going on in the class. I will also check with my students whether they are still with me. I will also encourage my students to stop and ask questions whenever they don’t understand what they are learning.

  13. Dear Dr.Andy,

    Three applications:

    1. The first moment when a teacher see a student is so important impression. I am always aware of that moment because students would like to know their teacher is a friendly, dynamic and smart person or not. So I try to prepare the code information as much as possible.

    2. Today, there are many different students who come from many countries, cultures, and backgrounds therefore I firstly open my heart to listen to them and try to meet their needs.

    3. The first class I usually give students changes to introduce themselves and to talk with their classmates because they will learn from and with each other in and out class.

    Sincerely,

    Vu Do Anh Khoa

  14. The first session (course introduction) was interesting with new friends around. Dr. Andy was able to explain clearly the class rules, his expectations, teaching methods and evaluations. I believe that most of the students, like me, felt so welcome to the class and foresee that future sessions will be more interesting and exciting. It will be also interesting and exciting because of the students who have varied experiences and cultural backgrounds, but with a common goal of improving themselves in the field of teaching.

Some of the ideas brought up during the session which I have been doing in my class are:
    1. Just like what Dr. Andy did, I always discuss during the first meeting the class rules, topics to be covered for the whole term, home works, projects and evaluation/grading system. I always make clear with my students that they are the ones who are making their grade and not the teachers.
    2. I try my best to make my students feel comfortable in my class so they will be encouraged to participate more.
    3. Whenever I’m discussing in the class, I always ask input from my students and encourage them to ask questions if they do not understand anything.

I know there will be a lot more of new ideas and teaching methods that I can learn in this class from Dr. Andy and my classmates. And I am really looking forward to that.
    Thanks.
    Emil

  15. As I am not a teacher and don't have any background in education so I was worry about my background to catch up things in the class but one thing in the first class could support me was the positive environment that Dr.Andy had created and it encouraged me a lot to go through this challenge.

    Although it was the first class and it seems just to be an introduction of the course but I could get some applications which I could utilize it in my job;

    1) Most of my audiences are older than me and as you know Thai culture beliefs in seniority tradition so I will apply Dr.Andy's technique to create positive environment at first and make audiences realize how value and benefit of the course that they will get

    2) Dr.Andy told us about his experience to be challenged by his students last semester and he encouraged us not to be afraid to challenge, it inspired me to apply this mindset when I train my audiences and I'll not to be afraid to challenge as a student role as well

    3) I remembered when Dr.Andy wanted to talk about how interactive this class is he gave us examples of the meaning of "Interactive";
1.a blackberry phone of some student
    2.a pencil case
I think my audiences should understand more if I give them practical examples as Dr.Andy did

So thank you Dr.Andy and everyone in the class You guys very energetic and friendly, it was a very good start for us.

    See you
    Gina

  16. This is my first semester learning this major,so everything is very fresh for me. First day of class is very important as it sets the tone for the rest of the school year.First time learing this major,I felt very excited, and a little worried.I was very worry about my english,Because English is not my native language,I'm afraid not understand the content of the teacher. But Dr. Andy said “you don’t have to understand everything!!” That encourage me to keep learning all the time, and I’ll try my best to do everything.First class I got to meet new friends come from different countries. They are very friendly,so nice people.Dr. Andy is a very interesting person,he is so cute,I like to listen to him.I hope we have a good time learning this major.

2.We have to learn how to communicate with people,we should stop and ask questions whenever we don't understand what we are learning.

    is very important things.

would be.I real had a fun class.
In the following 14 weeks,I deeply believe that we will have interresting and meaningful time together.

    My 3 applications:
1.This is my first lesson of master degreee.Hence I'm a bit worried. But Dr.Andy you told us that “You don't have to understand

everything”,so that I felt well. To be honest, I'll improve my English level to catch up your speed.

1.You are a kind man, you want us to study with you lightly. So you told me that I don't have to understand everything. Thank you so much!
2.But I feel fear. You sail I don't need to understand everything, then, If I can't understand anything, how I can get my dear A.
    3. I am a teacher now, I am going to use the knowledge from you to improve on my teaching. And I hope I can get more new information from your class.

  20. Reflection #1
Our first class was a good start where dr.andy informed us about the coming weeks. The video showed in class about the previous presentation looks entertaining. I hope we would be able to come up with something as fun. Last semester in our foundation to education class, I found it very interesting and fun and Im looking forward to another interesting semester this time.
    - Looking forward to an interative class and blog.
    - The presentation is sure to help improve our communicative and interpersonal skills.
    - Encourage students to ask questions and be involoved through the lesson for a more student centered learning.

    Navnita :)

  21. Thanks for all the feedback and support, and I agree with Neet that we should be able to learn while at the same time enjoying our times together. Chiwei, you seem quite stressed out about things and I would like you to try not to take it all so seriously. Please read my response to your question in the other section of the blog. If you spend all your time worrying about how to get an A, you will not learn anything and the class will have been a waste. Please focus on the learning and the grades will take care of themselves. Best Wishes Everybody, looking forward to a great class tonight! Andy
